Anyone out here in Rig Talk land ever hear his mod III? The clips on his web page sound really nice.

would like to put his panther mod against some of the guys here on the forum

particularly the natas (not out yet) and the hairy brown eye by dave himself.

not many talk about bray's mods. i think marshall law owned one at onetime? maybe he can chime in. i dont have a problem with him at all - i've spoken to him a few times and he's real down to earth.

He still owns one....but he has either a mod 1 or 2.

your right, Mine is a mod II, but I'm sure his panther mod has to rock  because I love my mod II

I had the Mod I on a 1987 head at one point. I thought it sounded good but was a little 'honky'. It cleaned up well. It also does go into controllable feedback easily but never understood why that would be a selling point.

Shortly thereafter, I tried a Splawn modded 1959 (not voiced to my tastes). Not my cup of tea. Then a Cameron modded 1959 with he Ocean mod (again, did not care for the voicing). Then an Egnater Seminar head (too throaty).

I currently have a Friedman modded 1959 with the Brown Eye mod. It has about the same gain as the Mod 1 by Bray but is much more organic and clearer. It can be bright without being harsh and sits VERY well in a two guitar band.

I have not tried a Fortin but for my money, Friedman is where it's at if you want to have a modded Marshall that still retains the Marshall character. I would have enjoyed having the HBE mod as well but at this point, do not think that I need it. I play in a covers band that does 60's - today. The Brown Eye does everything except Nu-Metal on it's own. It won't give you a sparkly clean on the BE input but I can get a passable grit clean with single coils or low output buckers and volume rolled down.

I'd like to say that I am done chasing the tone in my head.

Dave Bray Modded an amp for me and I had if for 6 years.
I actually liked the Bray amp and I think Dave is one hell of a great guy.
It had that Marshall vibe to it with just a hint more gain...Not insane gain but just enough and it sounded good at any volume.
It has that honky midrange, so if that's not your thing then skip it.

Now for the negative.... The Bottom end on the amp is EXTREMELY loose and tubby bordering on overkill. The way that I corrected that was to hit the amp a bit with a boost that had a bit of a treble hump.
The other thing that I noticed is that the tone control knobs did little to nothing to alter the sound.

With that said, the amp has since been sent to Mike Fortin for the California Mod. After playing Mikes work, I'm no longer looking for that killer Modded marshall tone.

Im 100% behind Mike and what he can do with amps.

I hope this helps

Ralph

I see your in CT, we should get together sometime as I have a Fortin 1959 Cali and would be cool to play each one back to back
