That is perfectly normal. The gain comes from the preamp. Can you go out of the Diezel preamp into another power amp?
I think it might be faulty jacks.
How would I try that? I don't have a standalone power amp. Could I safely go into another head?

Yeah, as long as cabinets are attached. Go from Diezel send to the return of the other amp.
Do not do it if you mix up send and return,,,

Possible it's a relay?
I've never heard of one failing .. maybe the mute ?

I dropped off my VH4 to a new tech this past Saturday, he has experience working on them. My first impressions were that he seemed very knowledgeable and passionate. I'm hopeful that he'll be able to resolve the issue.

Relays DO fail. I had a Channel 4 and/or Channel 3 relay go bad on me 10 years ago. My amp was still within warranty but it was quicker to repair/replace the part myself (I'm an electronics engineer by trade and was IPC certified on touchup/rework a lifetime ago). I passed the information on to Mr. Diezel that he likely had a questionable batch of magnetic relays back in 2011 based on my findings and repair.
In any case, the replacement relay has been in the amp for 10 years with no problems.

When it failed, it didn't happen overnight. It took a week or two- the signal would cut in and out and output sounded "scratchy". It became increasingly worse and started to affect Channel 3 as well. I found the culprit by tapping around on the chassis until I found a microphonic sound source- right where the Channel 3 and Channel 4 magnetic relays were located.

In summary: if it IS a relay, it would have to be a "master" relay to affect ALL output and channels. You really need someone to go through the signal path within the amp with a meter and confirm where it dies off/where current and voltage are missing because THAT is where your issue is.

It does seem to be a relay issue. I've found a highly qualified tech who's currently communicating with Peter in order to resolve the issue,
