Do Guitarists Become Better When They Die?

I'm sorry I hate this fucking argument, and the whole "I'm the smarter/truer/kvlter metal head cause I know about Exhorder" shtick. I listen to Exhorder, they are not Pantera. There's similarities, but it's metal from the same area at the same time so no shit there's similarites. Not to mention when I listen to Exhorder I hear a lot of Slayer. Listen to Pepper Keenan Corrosion of Conformity. That's where Pantera came from, that New Orleans early 90's sound because that is what Phil brought to the band. Simple as that.

was then nicked by Pantera https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99i9Buxt9Lg

or take any song from this album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pF8S_ssMmI

or listen to late 80s groovy thrash like Exodus

or take any country/southern riff from the past 100 years, add a few tri-tones

or take the wiggly whammy work of ANY 80s guitarist

slap a beard on it and bam Pantera, I don't get why Dimebag is so invulnerable from criticism

OMG, lol that dream theater thing...that wasn't borrowed by Pantera, that WAS Pantera....to most of us that was understood back then, it was an homage by Portnoy of/to Pantera...dude, stop talking here....you look wet behind the ears like you don't know wtf you're talkin' about..Pantera and DT were both big at that time and gaining audiences, even sharing spots on promotional videos. Good God

Being "southern", your little formula after that for Dime/Pantera just sounds ridiculous.
I am first to be against saying you have to like something....believe me, I hate that kind of shit. But seriously, IMO you're way off base.

This, agreed! Being a fan of thrash before Pantera got huge, there is no doubt Pantera was the band who broke out with that style......no question.

how the hell did this thread turn into a pantera/dimebag love/hate fest  who cares if dime was an innovator or not?? the question was did he become "better" after he died, to which I would say probably no...mainly because his main band was DONE long before he died and his new band didn't really change the "formula" so in many ways his "relevance" and development had pretty much run its course (IMO)

Its different with guys like Rhoads and Hendrix because they were still on the rise in terms of their playing so there is always that "what would they have done next" which adds mystique because you only have a tiny snapshot of their talent .... that was gone with dime

As mention it also happens to a lot of guitarists with longevity, they start of great and then as the listener gets old we find them boring so in many ways they have "died" to us

I think Jimmy Hendricks, Dambeg Darnell, and Rhandy Rodes are all splendid keytarists.

How could you leave out Edie Van Hamlin?

She is still alive.

Dimbog Durrel and Rundy Reeds are great but being died helps

But I still don't like Poontera, if their keytarist didn't die, they'd of been the next Whitsnake...churnning out garbage was past their prime and living off their associations of yesterday

Ghosty why the hate for Pantera? The anger runs deep in you young jedi knight! Let's face it, Exhorder "style" of rythm and vocals may have been borrowed or helped influence Pantera, but with Dime they certainly took it up a notch and made some fantastic skull crushing music. I mean watch him rip through his leads here at an old clinic, how can you not respect the phrasing and bends/vibrato he has? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R99RyGMYz48 he uses these flat bends up to pitch alla MArty Friedman and some really cool slow playing with feeling that you don't see anymore in today's hardcore.

No hate haha, I just don't find shredding blues pentatonic scales that interesting! As I said many times "musically they do nothing for me." It's not a hate thing, it's just been done before, and will be done again! Dime did not invent that type of guitar playing, you can see it being done 10 years prior.

I think so. Take Hendrix. He did some off the wall stuff for his time, mostly noise making, yet despite how far guitar playing has come he still gets talked about in "Best guitarist Ever" discussions. Imagine Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock. He leaves the stage and is immediately followed by VanHalen playing eruption. Nobody would have remembered Hendrix.

dime was a god
the dude who is dissing him obviously never saw him live when pantera was at their early.peak years

it's funny and sick to think yngwie would indeed be heralded as a god if he died in that car accident since he really has become a living parody of himself

that and also michael hedges should not have died when he did
massive loss there

evh basically stopped innovating on 1984 so in a sense he is dead too but i still love his corpse :D
*cues up slayers necrophiliac

I have seen Pantera, I was young and impressionable but it just didn't speak to me musically, it was a slobbery mess of drunk and drugged up guys playing metal with a southern flare on the tail end of trash... I didn't see any god worthiness. All my friends suddenly became Pantera fans after his death, before that they didn't see a big deal with DP or Pantera

It's not sick to think a good guitarist (yngwie) would become a god (Dime) upon his death... that's the point in the thread. As you said... he has BECOME a living parody of himself... this is only possible if you are alive to do so.

Anyone who dies is a shame, the level of impact on yourself as a result of that death is subjective. Subjectively Dime wasn't a big deal as he didn't impact me personally, it shot through one ear and out the other

+1 to all of that ..... all my mates were into pantera around vulgar coming out but they did nothing for me. When they come here on that tour one of my mates had a ticket but couldn't go so gave me his ticket, so I went mainly because it was a saturday night and I had nothing else to do.....was bored shitless after about 20 minutes.

About 5 yrs ago I bought one of those multi pack album things of them and man it is a tough listen

They were the "hype" band of their time, and rightfully so! They were the biggest band in that new style of music.

I wonder if Cliff Burton was still alive today.... then metallica would of kept the trash

everything in our pop culture is better when they die, even whores and drug addicts

I can guarantee maybe 50% of his fans now became fans when he died and they were 13 and thought it was cool to like them because they were hyped to no end at the time of his death

Dude stop. At this point all it sounds like is wahhh  wahhhh

Everyone knows that, like everyone else, he got elevated after he was killed. That doesn't change the fact that he was already a legend with signature guitars, amps, pedals, and pickups in a time before everyone had signature gear. He had been on the cover of magazines for over a decade at that point, and was one of the best known guitar players in the world.

To me the answer is no. If I liked his music before I do not and will not magically like it more or think he or it got better just because he died.

Take Jeff Hanneman for instance....he wrote some of the best thrash/metal songs of all time...he is dead now.....he and his music did not get better just because he died.

My mom's aunt made the best breakfast tacos when I was a kid....she passed.....her tacos and taco making abilities did not get any better after her passing.
