Do I Need an Old Recto in My Life?

I play a mix of metal genres. I have a JMP 2203, a 6505, and an AOR already, along with a few 4x12s, too many overdrives, treble boosters, distortion pedals, etc.

However, I love the Cannibal Corpse tone. Rev G triples seem to go for $2k-ish fairly regularly. I already have an MT-2W, and would likely pick up an ST-9 if I bought a recto.

The internet being the cruel mistress it is has me debating if buying an old 2 channel triple is really the move right now. I think the triple is being reissued soon, which I’m guessing will drop used prices on old ones. Also, 3ch triples are significantly cheaper.

tl;dr is there any good reason NOT to buy a 90s triple rec right now?

If I was to get one again I would go for reissue. But I don’t I am. In the end they were just to rounded off in the bass department. Unless it’s a GZ modded triple. Love that one

Love me some Gibson guitars but they're not an "amplifier company". Every MESA ive had was too insanely LOUD. And i like LOUD. I play 2
100 watt Marshalls regularly.
But the MESA is a different kinda loud. I could never get any of mine past 2 or 3 on a Master w/o causing hearing damage or shaking "snow" off
ceiling tiles.
I would never say never really like them but they're way overpriced and nobody inluding 2 world class techs i have wants to work on them.
MESA brand died with Randall as far as im concerned and any MESA 20+ yrs old needs work. Just the nature of the beast.
Gibson is famous for screwing people and not keeping their word especially current ownership.

^ Gravity Strings on Broadway not only did the Series Loop mod on mine but also the Pre 500 "C" mod. Quick. Cheap. Detailed. :dunno:

Then, if you patch the loop you can use the overall master to tame things better.

But @neptoess the answer is yes.
Can't speak to whether you need a Triple Reissue.
You get to a point where you can start to split hairs.
I would get a used Dual and go from there. I got mine for $1500 shipped.

This place isn’t too far from me, so I’m not too worried about any potential work that needs done https://share.google/jHoj1BGcsgMLNPOgC

I figured I would just leave the loop bypassed. As for splitting hairs, I’ve basically narrowed down that triples do sound different than duals (tighter, more aggressive), but there still seems to be some debate about whether there’s any real magic in the 2 channel models, or if the 3 channel models are just harder to dial in (weirdly, everyone seems to love the multiwatts). There’s also no real consensus on whether the Mesa oversized 4x12 is a necessary ingredient to the soup or not. These are the points I would ideally like some deeper knowledge on.

Just to reiterate, I am not after the stereotypical late 90s / early 2000s nu metal / butt rock recto tone. I plan to use it as a stupidly gained out death metal amp (like Cannibal Corpse Bloodthirst or Wretched Spawn). I use my 6505 for this stuff currently, but it’s obviously voiced completely differently from a recto. To be fair, I got it to do Carcass, Exhumed, Impaled, etc goregrind stuff and it handles that task beautifully.

We love to bash Gibson on ALL the inter web forums....but, whoever runs their amp division needs a gold medal. Mesa has finally actually re created 2 of the best sounding and most iconic amps, the 2C+ and Rev C Rectifier. Well, the 90s RI Recto isn't advertised as a C but I know more than 2 that have sold their Rev Cs in favor of the 90s RI. Same with OG C+ owners.

So, OP, if I were you, I'd grab a new or used 90s RI or wait for the Triple Ri that should come out this year. The Dual is so good, it's like an already boosted early revision recto, but you are plugged straight in no boost. I'd imagine IF you boost the 90s, it will take you to where you want to go.

I honestly love Gibson. I was extremely busy working at a bay area tech company, so much so that I didn’t touch a guitar for a few years. 2020 hit, and I decided to buy myself a “nice” guitar, so I landed on one of the 70s series Vs. This thing made me fall back in love with playing guitar.

I think waiting for the triple reissue is the key though. It will possibly be exactly what I want, and I’ll buy it, but it will likely drop used rev F/G triple prices regardless.

Nice! Congrats. Not a V player myself, but love all things Schenker. I do know another V man here, @Exo-metal is V all day. Well, King V to be exact.

I’d love to get an old double rhoads (the original King V), but they’re hard to come by. I “settled” for an 85 Rhoads

Ahh, settling for an 85 Jackson....I know all about that as I have an 86 Jackson Strat. Identical to the last 85 Charvel I had. Best guitar I've owned.

Definitely a unique vibe. The neck is a lot thicker and the frets are a lot smaller than a modern Jackson. It’s got a Kahler and the J50N / J80 pickups in it rule. Lucky for me, I prefer chunkier necks and don’t love jumbo frets, so it’s just about the perfect Jackson for me.

Yeah, I do like Triples better than the Duals. I would either wait for a Triple Rectifier Reissue or find a Rev G Triple.

Disregard every word of this geriatric curmudgery.
Mesa Marks and Rectos have some of the best master volumes in the business, and the recent Mesa/Gibson reissues are two of the best Mesas ever released. Get a RI Recto and don’t look back. Seriously, it’s that fucking good and will do CC tone in spades.

Looks like I’m waiting for that triple reissue
