Do I Need an Old Recto in My Life?

Just to reiterate, I am not after the stereotypical late 90s / early 2000s nu metal / butt rock recto tone. I plan to use it as a stupidly gained out death metal amp (like Cannibal Corpse Bloodthirst or Wretched Spawn).
The best era of CC (y)

Cesar has been playing what I suspect is the new triple in a bunch of videos lately. They always angle the camera so you can’t quite see the name but it’s a black chassis two channel rectifier. Sounds great

Disregard every word of this geriatric curmudgery.
Mesa Marks and Rectos have some of the best master volumes in the business, and the recent Mesa/Gibson reissues are two of the best Mesas ever released. Get a RI Recto and don’t look back. Seriously, it’s that fucking good and will do CC tone in spades.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion w/o being a dickhead.

We love to bash Gibson on ALL the inter web forums....but, whoever runs their amp division needs a gold medal. Mesa has finally actually re created 2 of the best sounding and most iconic amps, the 2C+ and Rev C Rectifier. Well, the 90s RI Recto isn't advertised as a C but I know more than 2 that have sold their Rev Cs in favor of the 90s RI. Same with OG C+ owners.

So, OP, if I were you, I'd grab a new or used 90s RI or wait for the Triple Ri that should come out this year. The Dual is so good, it's like an already boosted early revision recto, but you are plugged straight in no boost. I'd imagine IF you boost the 90s, it will take you to where you want to go.

This. I've had as many issues with Gibson as anyone. But they've done a good thing by reissuing MB's greatest amps.
Old Mesas are badass but will need service. I think the new ones look badass.

Also this. It's hard to find techs willing to work on them. I won't.

I'd spring for a reissue, or wait for them to reissue the triple.

In friends guitar shops here, I won't claim that they won't take Mesas if they are in good condition...but a beat ass DR, they aren't wanting it.

I will give just about anything a shot, to fix

But after a handful of Roadsters and Road Kings with the eternal silence from the channel switcher relay, I give people the "fuck you" price quote on all mesas

I have a 1978 and a 1989 amp. Neither have needed much (tubes and caps, not a big deal). As I mentioned previously, I have a great repair shop near me. They’re certified for Mesa warranty work.

I’m hearing seemingly universally great things about the 90s DR reissue though, so I think holding off for the 90s TR reissue to be available is the move just in case I like it more than the rev G. If I do like the rev G more, I’m not worried about it being “old”. I just think the prices are likely to drop when the new one gets released

Triples sound colder, drier, stiffer than a Dual IME. I wouldn't call them "tight" but I suppose tighter than a Dual (both still need a boost for trashy riffing).

I prefer Duals, but obviously some prefer Triples.

I could not dial in a non-Multiwatt recto to save my life. It was always so close to sounding good but never could get it there.

The multiwatts sound ok but the low end somehow is tame without being tight and there's a nasal thing to the upper mids that I hear and don't like.

The new reissues sound killer. Would love to play one.

people were saying this about iic+'s, from what ive seen though i think they actually went up if anything. maybe run of the mill rectos will come down a little, but RevG's are the sound of the 90s that people are always gonna want, i cant see them changing much

Yeah I sincerely doubt the prices are going to go down.

The prices for everything just go up higher and higher because were printing ourselves into an inflation crisis, to go along with the housing and food hyperinflating.

What that all means is NOTHING gets cheaper. Even cheap import stuff is getting more expensive right now - try to find a WEM BC Rich for 3-500$ like you could do 5 years ago.

My gut was kind of telling me I can’t lose picking up a rev G. I’ll keep my eyes out for any that come up for sale. If I can get one for around $2k shipped, I’ll probably pull the trigger. Even if the inevitable reissue sounds “better”, I’m sure the rev G will do what I want it to. If it doesn’t, I somehow doubt the reissue will.

i wouldnt hesitate, if i had to pick one amp out of my collection it would be the tripleG, especially if i was doing 2000s cannibal tones. i like it most with T75's and G12-65's

That's what I was saying. Get the best deal you can find and worry about 'the best' or splitting hairs later.

Reminds us that speakers/cab will affect things more than this version vs that one - but that's not always the case.

And as Dan said, I don't see them going down. Only up. Somewhat due to Gibson, somewhat due to inflation.

Welp, Reverb seller just accepted my lowball offer. Rev G triple on the way

Bing Bong congrats

Cabwise, I have T75, V30, reissue G12M greenbacks, Marshall G12 Vintage, and H75 creamback at my disposal. All in 1936 or 1960 cabs. I may add an oversized recto slant at some point in the future, but I don’t see any immediate need to. Pretty sure at least one of the Cannibal albums was recorded with a recto into G12-65s
