Do I Need an Old Recto in My Life?

I've owned an early revision/transition G 2 channel dual recto. I sent it to Mesa had it repaired and modded to a revision C. It was amazing. When the mark VII came out I started flipping and trading some amps working towards a mark VII. Ended up getting a MultiWatt Triple on a trade that I had intended to sell. Before I listed it though I shot it out against my modded 2 channel. I ended up selling the 2 channel G/C. The triple MW was amazing and pretty much sounded the same. I rolled some tubes that I had laying around in it thinking it had to be better than the JJ's that where in it and never really compared it back to how I originally got it. Recently I had an early tremoverb with a series loop in from a friend and was blown away at how much better it sounded than my triple. Anyways long story short I ended up putting the JJ's preamp tubes back into the triple MW and it was just as good as the early tremoverb. I say all this to say, keep an eye out for a MW triple and don't be shy about putting JJ's in the preamp section. Mine is a monster that has stood up to two early rectos.

Reminds us that speakers/cab will affect things more than this version vs that one - but that's not always the case.

and most of us arent gonna have a C/D/E/F/G/whatever at the same time to compare, and then what works with one guitar and cab might not be as good as the next, thats why i just went with the classic G

I took that concept a bit further and had my G modded to C so I could experience the difference.
Much tighter now, hardly use a boost anymore, more 'clank' has @harddriver put it. But still has the "G juice"

I’ve come to accept that I _like_ playing through a boost. I thought for the longest time that I would love to have an amp I could just plug straight into and have it sound perfect but… for metal, I always prefer playing with a boost.

Me too.

I almost always do also except for some specific situations, like many of the Synergy modules for example.

My recto experience was like this:
Bought 2 early Rev G duals, small logo/attached power cord. They both had a low mid bloat that I couldn't dial out. Not a bad sound but not for me. Then, 2 G Triples....first was a blackout small logo, now THAT is a great sound. No mid bloat, tighter than the duals and boosted was killer. Tried another G triple, small logo/chrome chassis but this one didn't sound as good as the blackout one. Both were miles better to my ear than the G duals, for what I like anyway. But, I had an opportunity to grab an F Triple so I sold the G...as good as the G Triple was, the F totally stomped it. Way more rich/organic tone...3D, whatever term one wants to use for just a BETTER sound. I then understood why the early revisions were sought after.

Eventually I scored a Rev C Dual. That amp was the BEST of all the Mesas I owned...over 4 C+s, and the previous Rectos. It had a feel that was similar to a C+, and the power section punched like a vintage super lead. The King of the Mesas to my ear. In the end, all got sold as I'm a Marshall player at heart.
But, I am intrigued by the 90s RI and will grab a Triple at some point this year. If they are so good that a C recto blushes, well..I'm in.

Ya, I am really impressed with my Multi-watt Recto. I like it better than ANY Rev G I have owned over the years and as much as any Rev F I have played. While it is inherently a bit tighter and present in the upper mids, it can still do the 90's Rev G thing if you want it to. And for cheaper, as I do see decent deals for Multi-watts around.
