And if so what is you preferred configuration?

This is in regard to live/in-the-room sound. Recorded tone doesn't matter as much.

I've mixed speakers over the years. While I don't have any ultimate favorite paring I have learned I only like mixing in top/bottom configuration in a 412. That translates to a vertical 212 for a smaller cab. My preferred method is to put the speakers I want to be dominant on top and speakers to "fill out" the sound on the bottom. My secondary config is putting quieter speakers on top so they don't get lost.

I don't like an X pattern. Yes, it blends the two speakers together better, but that's only if you're standing right in front of the cab. I find there's too much change in sound walking across the room.; or even just stepping slightly to one side or the other. It throws me off. Top/Bottom has a more consistent sound regardless of where I stand. It's also the reason I hate mixing speakers in a horizontal 212. The change in sound as I move around is too inconsistent.

It sounds like you don't like mixing speakers. You listed all the reasons why in the post. You set your cab up with the dominant speakers on top so that you don't hear the mix when you do it. Why not just run separate cabs with different speakers?

I like mixing speakers, just in the top/bottom configuration. Using my Weber Grey Wolf and Silver Wolf speakers as an example. The Grey Wolfs are upper mid focused, the Silver Wolfs are lower mid focused. When mixed you get more of a full spectrum sound. When the Grey Wolf is on top I still hear both speakers, but I hear the Grey Wolf's upper mids a little more prominent. If the Silver Wolf is on top the sound is still similar only with the lower mids being a bit more prominent. Obviously that would be the case since the top speakers are closer to your ear. When either of them are on their own the sound is completely different than when mixed.

That's what I mean when I say put the dominant speaker on top. It's characteristic comes through a little more, but not where it swallows up everything so you still hear a good mix of both speakers. .

I like X pattern with similar (but slightly different) speakers as long as the sensitivity matches. You often hear that mixing should be done with 2 speakers that have a different footprint to fill out the other.........V30/GT75 for example. But I don't like the imbalance that creates. I have both A and B 4x12's with UK Greenbacks and 75 hz Blackbacks in an X. I also like greenback top/H30 bottom........even though I moved away from that.

I hate it mostly . Even my Uberkab . Everyone loves it but I only like wizards and Bogners through it . Everything else idk . I hate 75s

The only combined speakers I really liked was Greenbacks on top, G12T75'S bottom and my current combo the only X pattern I've ever liked which is Creamback Neos and Splawn Small Blocks. They really blend well and the tone is surprisingly consistent when moving around the cab.
