Don will have to sing 2 whole steps down ...
This clip is recent. Don sounds good enough here.

For someone who had to have major vocal chord surgery..that's almost as good as when I saw them in the 90s.

Who is it on gitfiddle these days...?

Jon Levin...and as much as I love that classic line-up, he just nails the role. He kind of blatantly channels 80's Lynch, but does it so well. I hate to admit it, but the way he dials in tone and plays is how I wish George still did it.

Ah Jon Levin....great guitarist, really loved the last Dokken disk he did.

Tho it wouldn't be a show I would go outta my way to see,if Metallica or exodus or someone was in this situation...and publicly said "it's just for the money", I'd drag my fat ass out of my truck to see them. Nobody tours for free, just for the love of it. It's a job and now it's the ONLY way to make money as a "band".

Ask yourself this question(flame me if you want, don't care).

How many of you guys that are bemoaning the fact that it's "all about the money" illegally download music? Don't justify ripping music with the "if I like what I steal,I'll then buy it" adage. Just answer the question to yourself. Professional musicians have to tour to make money because many people just steal music off the internet. And many band situations are not always the greatest families to be in.

Good luck to the fellas in dokken. Making money is a bitch.

^ good points

This thread forced some discussion on the topic - which is what I wanted. Obviously there are some die hard Dokken fans in here so I certainly didn't mean to offend. In the end, I think any band is going to get more people to the shows if the people believe in a genuine performance. No? That's more money. Even if you fake it. To someone else's point, I'm sure the producers are cringing at comments that were made about them just doing it for the money. That was my point.

Would I have gone to the last 3 Van Halen concerts if I knew they were doing it only for the money? Maybe. Probably.

Would I go to see Dokken knowing their past and such? Probably not. Not unless they were on a bill with a bunch of others. Sorry. Flame away :dunno:

For example, I saw Dokken back in the day at Monsters of Rock - but honestly I was more interested in Scorps, Van Halen, Metallica and even Kingdom Come.

I like 'Its Not Love' and 'Breakin' the Chains' and 'Alone Again' and 'In My Dreams' though

I was infatuated with this song and this video for a long time...

PS: I don't download music illegally. I believe in giving artist their fair share. If can't afford it - I'm not fucking buying it. I'm also a CD guy and love my CD's even though they are out of style now.

PPS: 311 is a band who does not seem to be in it for the money. They charge the bare minimum to their shows. KSE seems similar. Other bands, Metallica and Aerosmith for example, don't even really need the money. Would you pay $189 for a ticket to see them?

It looks like the Dokken reunion is now official.......Just 6 shows in Japan and possibly one American show in South Dakota.

South Dakota?

Of all places.

Boring. I should know. I grew up there. We used to have to go to North Dakota to have fun.

I have been listening to Dokken since high school in 85' and blows my mind that these guys have been not getting along for that long. Reality is that three get along, and Don and George don't. They have made some great music but just drive each other nuts for whatever reason.

One other thing I just want to point out, especially to youngsters that can't remember, but believe it or not there was a time where Ratt and Dokken were two of the biggest bands and were on every magazine cover, every rock show, and in the front of the album bins. Granted, it was due to their awesome guitarists but was a cool period. Now they are the butt of jokes in movies, etc. but there was a time when they were running the show.

I still remember when "In My Dreams" was voted solo of the year in a Guitar World mag. Such an awesome song!

Yup, I remember those days well and still have a copy of that magazine. And Dokken was all over MTV when MTV mattered in the industry. Amp builders making the ultimate hot rodded Marshall style amps still usually demo their amps with clips of Van Halen, Dokken and Ratt.

If anyone actually thinks that any band goes out on a reunion tour or, 'get back together tour', for anything but the money, they are hallucinating… At least these guys tell the truth.
Do people really think Guns'n Roses or AC/DC are touring for the fans? Please…

Personally I think
Jon Levin out plays lynch now
Dons voice is shot
The reason it's Japan is no draw in US
Someone posted a show in a parking lot a few years
Ago in Chicago or something and there
Was 10 people there

Yup that was me posting about 10 people showing up (in Minneapolis though).

And you're right about everything said above. I love Lynch but man Levin smokes these days. Jon seemed to pick up right where Lynch left off. Plus Jon being younger he likely breathes new life into Dokken's music. He's literally the best guitarist Dokken could have if they couldn't have Lynch - he cops Lynch's style so well yet so much his own. I've seen Don perform a couple times over the last 10 years and his voice is absolutely terrible.

Now, I haven't heard anything negative about Lynch to be honest, but a big part of me wonders why he has such a big revolving door of musicians...

There is one US date in South Dakota (WHAT?!?), but of course it's for the money. Japan for some reason still digs Dokken big time.

I love George Lynch, he is the reason I picked up the guitar. I wore out Under Lock and Key and Tooth and Nail. The reality is, I like some of the new songs that Jon wrote (lightning strikes from a few years back is a great return for them) and I love a lot of Lynch Mob tunes. With a reunion, you get great songs, but not all of the great songs and Don who just can't do it anymore (unfortunately).

As to the OP, Mick has always been the clown and smart ass of the band, so it doesn't surprise me that he was so crass about it. With that said, does it make the GNR reunion any less to know that they're just doing it for the $?

Lynch is my favourite guitarist. I thought the Souls of We album and Smoke and Mirrors sounded amazing. I dug his playing with dokken and dig his playing now with Lynch Mob. Even KXM was pretty cool.

But every so often, a band gets it right with a replacement band member. Rob Marcello took over for Andy Timmons in D2. Totally different styles, but both are great players and you can't knock either one. Jon Levin is that way with dokken (though he cops a great Lynch). Lightning Strikes again was a great album and the song Empire off Broken bones is great its what dokken should be. The extended guitar solo in empire reminds me of Tooth and Nail.

Don's voice is totally shot. I agree. Its why I'm not super excited to see a Dokken reunion. I like Levin and lynch and pilson, and mic, but Don can't sing very well. I'd be more excited to see the original Dokken members (With Don doing backing vocals and song writing), Jon playing alongside Lynch and London LeGrand or Oni singing lead. That's would be something. A new album with Jon and George trading off solo's would kick major ass!

Exactly my thoughts as well, even regarding D2 (totally kick ass with Rob). I have had the privilege of seeing Dokken a few times as well as Lynch a few time, and both were great in their own rights. Lynch is my guy, the reason I play, so to hear his songs, along with Dokken songs is more interesting to me. With that said, Lynch has never had the success that Dokken had, so for him, I don't mind the cash grab and I would definitely go see them if they would tour the US.

Now with that said, Don is the band and always was. He did the work to get the deal and hired everyone else. It was that way from the start. George didn't like that deal in the 80's, as he was a rising star, but had no power to change it. For Don, why would he give that up? He still has hired hands and makes enough to fill his pockets and tours with guys that understand and accept the deal. It's a no brainer for him to continue with the train that he is on.

George did a guest appearance with Dokken and traded solos with Levin a few years back. I'm sure there's A YouTube video of it somewhere.

I don't think every situation is the same. From the clips I've seen recently, Axl and Co. actually look like they are enjoying themselves. The Dokken situation is different than other bands IMO because they all came out ahead of time and specifically said "this is just for the money". Who knows, maybe this will be the best shows they have ever had because they set the bar so low. :)

Don't worry, Don, George, Jeff and Mick will look like they are all best buddies on stage in Japan… It's an equal $$ four-way split this time too!
David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen had separate living quarters, separate tour buses, separate planes, separate dressing rooms, they did not even do sound checks together or eat together… etc. etc. etc.… The only time they saw each other was on stage, but they look like they loved each other again!

I heard Don say in an interview that for years he's been asked if they would get together again and he has just thrown out a huge number to basically say, no, it's not happening. He said, well, some promoters came to me and offered me that number, so how could I refuse. So, I called the guys and said, this is the offer, here's what I'm taking and here is what you're going to get and they agreed.

I know it's splitting hairs, but I don't think that it's an even split, but clearly more than they have made in decades for a tour.

Don said in his 8/8 interview with Eddie Trunk (already posted) that it is a four way split.

Splitting something four ways doesn't necessarily mean they're all getting an even cut. That is splitting hairs, but you can definitely split $1 million into four slices vastly different than $250k each.

Good point, the way Don worded it is that it was a four-way split, he did NOT say it was a four-way even split… You guys are smart!
