Done with overdrive pedals... EQ's are the way...

The old blue ones do sound awesome, but they're noisy as hell...full of hiss.

It can be a bit hissy, but I don't find it that bad or distracting, it's just one of the drawbacks of boosting and high gain I think?? and it depends on the settings. I use a Boss NS-2 noise gate that I use sometimes (when i have a lot of pedals hooked up) and it does the job of getting rid of all most of the hiss and hum from my effects.

But...I'm kinda interested in the noise reduction mod and might get it done to my black mxr 6 band (new version) to see how it sounds?? I'm worried that this mod might kill the tone of my vintage MXR. It has a VERY good sound to it, and sounds better than any EQ pedal i've ever used... not too say anything bad about the new ones cause they sound great too, but these vintage ones just sound "that" good to me. I might get another if I can find one at a decent price.

I like to use an EQ to boost in modelers and SS amps. OD pedals can over-compress in these situations.

But, with tube amps I generally still prefer a Tubescreamer based OD. The compression they add along with the mid boosting makes a tube amp sound and feel like I want.

I think the EQ sounds equally good with my VTM (tube) and Randall (SS), but you are right, my overdrive pedals are more compressed sounding, which is something that you either love or hate... and i don't like it with the Randall all that much, or my Boogie... the boogie is already a very compressed amp, and it doesn't take well to overdrives/boost pedals.

Depends on the amp really. My Triple Recto benefits from the added compression.
