So what style do you practice? I did ITF TKD, Hawaiian Jiu Jitsu, and BJJ. My kids are doing WTF TKD right now before we move them to BJJ.
I hold a 4th Dan through WTF (Kukkiwon) and a 4th Dan through Chang Moo Kwan. I also belong to a Universal group with masters from multiple styles. We all come together and teach each other our styles… TKD, Kung Fu, Karate, Judo, Aikido, Wing Chun, Jiu Jitsu, Tai Chi, etc. So my main martial art is TKD, but I’ve adopted a lot of Kung Fu and Wing Chun due to the fluid motion (soft style).

I would agree with bringing your kids into BJJ. It’s likely the best martial art. I wish I knew more of it.

It was so cool watching the first few UFCs where this little skinny guy from Brazil was beating all of these monster dudes
with these slow, methodical moves.

His marathon bout with Dan Severn was a master class.

The UFC fights were my 2nd favorite thing about working at a Casino (the first being backstage access for shows).
Funny thing about the fighters though they they were all sorta bitches about their dressing rooms being too cold lol

Want a good laugh, watch this video. These poor people paid to get trained and all they have is false hope and terrible moves. These are the people who get hurt thinking they know martial arts because the have a black belt.

I mean that’s how 90% of all TKD testing I’ve seen looks like. These guys get black belts in two or three years. I give them all props for trying. They go to classes for exercise, camaraderie, and a challenge. These guys aren’t signing up to learn how to kick someone’s ass, most likely the opposite, learning how to avoid a fight or any confrontation period.

If someone is into it for exercise, camaraderie, spiritual development, etc, more power to them. That said, I’m conflicted with giving them a black belt in a martial art. Martial arts is all of what I wrote above, but a lot more. There is a massive combat element which cannot be ignored and those guys in that video I posted seem to be lacking basic fundamentals in any martial art I’ve seen. I think it’s a disservice to award them a black belt…which is providing them a false sense of hope and security. I get it though, martial arts has become a money making scheme and has added a lot of negativity towards the art itself. Hence why the video title reads McDojo.

For the record, no black belt I’ve been trained by or train looks remotely like those people in that video. Sure people have bodily differences, but you have to have basic skills and coordination to be in my school and I wouldn’t be associated with a school that had black belt students looking so bad. We’ve told people and families our school isn’t for them for this very reason. We have minimum standards that have to be abided by straight from the Kukkiwon in Korea.

Oh I hear you. I’m just saying that about 90% of TKD testing I’ve seen in the US. There a various levels of schools, but there was a big difference in level of intensity and combat level when I jumped to Thai boxing/Jiu Jitsu, to the point where I’m not afraid to admit I was sometimes nervous to just go to class and would come home fucked up and say I’m done. As far as I’m concerned 1st Dan in TKD essentially means you know the basics. Big difference between that and a BJJ brown belt.

Bas Ruten

At one point I think Bas could have seriously laid claim to the title of baddest man on the planet.
Think I'd rather be choked/knocked out rather than take one of his kidney shots back in his prime.

I haven’t heard the name Bas Ruten mentioned in a long time. Wow.

Bas may have been the overall baddest but Frank got him twice!
Those battles were EPIC!

No surprise at all as the homoeroticism is VERY strong here.

No wonder questionable support is given freely and regularly.
