yesterday my band was playing out of town and had some time to burn; so we went to gc and sam ash(neither are in the town i live in). both stores had a couple used 5150/6505's, so i grabbed a jackson off the shelf that was similar to my old charvel, but had a jb/sh-4 in the bridge instead of the blackout and the emg's i have in my other guits.

i also grabbed a similar guitar with emg's and was able to do direct comparisons between the two, and really liked the jb through the 5150.
it sounded fatter in the mids, and the top end was pretty smooth and did not sizzle as much as the emg's. mind you this was in a store, and not through my actual rig.
does anyone use the jb/sh-4 with their 5150, and like them better than emg's for full out brootz? why?
i did NOT like the duncan distortion through my amp, it sounded kind of hollow to me, but i'm really thinking about the jb now.

any opinions???????????

I don't care for the JB, but I still like it better than EMG's.

I don't really play brutalz but love high gain, my guitars with JB's sound great through my 6505+, can't comment on emg's though. I probably wasn't very helpful, sorry.

thats cool, i still want opinions on the pup in general. i'm not having much luck with the search right now.

i hated it playing in B in my buddies m1000. total mush. definately the worst pickup i played for detuned chugging.

I love how the JB sounds in low tunings with the 5150, but only if it's in a mahogany body guitar. It doesn't really seem to work too well in alder for lower tuned stuff like that IMO.

Yeah, because that guitar has an alder (or maple) body and is also maple neck through. Try it in a set neck mahogany guitar and it sounds 100% different.

are your guitars mahogany? if your ibby's are not, maybe the sh6 doesnt jive with them. i have the duncan distortion in my mahogany Z and i use it with my FJA 6505 for brootalz and i love it.

I've got guitars with both pickups. The JB sounds more focused and a little bit clearer and thicker to my ears. The EMG's have a more distinct "hotter" sound. I've always favored my JB equipped LP for recording rhythms and such and kinda half and half on leads between the two.

Arch Enemy uses the JB and they used to play with 5150 at one time (hasn't everybody...) if I remember correctly...

I think that pickup depends a lot on the guitar it's in. It sounds good in my mahogany Soloist, it probably would sound rather thin in brighter guitars.

I have a JB/59 combo in my Guild S-100. It's hot and middy -- the JB excels at doing aggressive hard rock tones -- It's not my favorite pickup, but I'm too lazy to change it out in that particular guitar,...or maybe because I can make it work for me in that particular guitar.

It's an OK pickup. A bit too undefined in the low end under really high gain, also a bit too harsh on higher notes. I find myself almost always rolling it off a bit, or blending it w/ the neck pickup.

Maybe that's why it's being replaced :) I don't think it would be your best choice for heavier tones.

Yeah, Mike Amott has been using the JB pretty much since he formed Arch Enemy.
