I've heard one of the 'secrets' to Ed's signature was due to the fact that he wore Converse Allstars in the studio. Something to do with static shielding... I find I get excellent gain tone wearing New Balance brand, and the best clean tone wearing Birkenstock sandals. I haven't seen Converse Allstars for sale in over 20 years, and I'm also somewhat dubious to the claim.

What are you guys wearing, and is there any validity to the claim?

They werent stock Converses, they were modded by some old guy from Chile.

He later admitted he had made that part up...he felt bad about all the people who mailed their Connies to Chile and came clean.

The Allstars were to throw people off the path. There was another type he wore underneath that had an extra shoelace on the back. People still debate what that shoelace actually did.

My Skecher casual loafers don't have the street cred or "in your face" sneaker squeak of the Converse All Stars, but they have a smooth refined gain unlike anything I've ever heard. Somewhere between Limp Bizkit and John Mayer. People need to quit trying to tap into EVH's "sole" and just wear the shoes that they're comfortable with.
