Effects loops overrated?

I like modulation into the input as well. I mean, who in their right mind puts phaser in the loop?

However, for high gain delay sounds best in the loop as well as reverb. But I also like running another delay into the input for a different feel, like Cathederal.

My feeling too. I don't like the way delay sounds in front of a high gain amp at all. In front of my Bassman set clean or with my OCD it sounds great.

I actually like using delay in the loop for some stuff, and out front for other stuff. This means 2 different pedals. For out front it works better if staccato type playing since you don't bleed the notes into eachother. Like Van Halens Cathederal, that works better with a delay out front.

Phaser in loop=very, very bad. Never a good idea unless you want a swirly mess of poo tone. Oh yeah...in my opinion...

As for delay, I keep a carbon copy in the loop and usually an El Cap in front.

Thanks for the info gents. I will keep the delay in the loop & take the modulation effects out & run them directly into the amp. I'll throw in an Xotic X-Blender in there so I can mix the dry to wet levels & that should sound pretty good I hope.

Why not try the delay both in front and in the loop and see which sounds better to you? That is what matters. I know you don't care what I have to say, but then again I don't use a loop either. I like the way things sounds in front of the amp.

I've never used an effects loop.

If I want reverb or delay I just yell at the sound guy. :D

Of course I care what you say. I'm a carin' sharin' kinda dude when it comes to guitar info.

I've been going effects loop crazy & trying everything in & out of loops & I've come to the conclusion that for me, I like delay, eq & reverb in the loop. I think they sound way cleaner & more articulate this way. Phaser definitely sounds better out of the loop as do chorus & flanger.

It definitely also depends on the amp, effects loop & your tone as well. For clean, everything in front is fine, but as soon as some gain is introduced, I think the whole chain has to be redone if articulation & clarity are what you're after.

Bad loops are the reason I let go of most amps that I sold.

Mod FX/Wah/Octave... upfront for me as well, but delay/reverb as well as the volume pedal in the loop please!

And yes, the Metro loop in Friedmans is killer!

Delay before distortion certainly can get mixed results. I push my poweramp into overdrive often with most of my amps - so the loop is not really something I usually use. As others have stated .... I much prefer a wet/dry rig. It gives a lot more control & just sounds better.

I am not sure if this makes sense but I think I prefer my delay to be not so clean? So that is why I stick them in front and prefer old analog ones. Even if I get digital ones, I tend to stick them in front. The only time I put them in a loop is if it is somehow convenient, like if the unit is sitting on my head, near the loop

I've been messing with my gear lately & noticed how much better my phase 90 sounds plugged right into the amp & as opposed to the effects loops.

I then tried this with my chorus & flanger & they all sound better this way. More warm & creamy & less harsh for some reason...

If the pedals sound "harsh" they are probably being overdriven by too strong of a signal. Does the loop have Send and Return level controls? If so, reduce the Send level.
