I just picked up a Eniy and I am just digging the hell out of it. I have been playing a VH4 for about 4 years now and it is a nice change of pace. Much looser and more saturated. I almost feel like I can play sloppy to some degree, compared to the VH4. :D
Awesome "brown sounds" in there. Cleans are really nice too.
I may even like it more than the VH4, Except no midi.

I became more interested in the Einstein after reading your post.
I don't think I can ever part with the VH4, it is just so damn good. Even if it is a pre 2007 model.

I'm so glad to hear this nice comparison with the VH4. I will have my Einie 100W picked up in Germany day after tomorrow. That is pretty weird considering I live in Stockholm, but there's no dealership in Sweden. First time ever I bought an amp without having played it. That's how much confidence I get from reading all your good reviews. Nice christmas present for myself I hope.

I've had a number of mostly good amps incl Boogie MK2, Seymour Duncan Convertible, Rivera, and now since 6 years the main rig is a Crate Red Voodoo. I have overall been satisfied, but now it is starting to suck. Might be the tubes, but I figure I need a change anyway.

I have a bit of a long winded question. When I bought the Boogie combo back in -82, it had a mean EV speaker in it. Too harsh for my taste. After a while I switched speaker to Celestion and got a much nicer sound out of the cabinet. But I couldn't get over that studio recordings never got as good again after the switch. I kept the EV12 in the attic for 15 years, then I chucked it into a closed monitor speaker cab. In small clubs I let the top drive just this monitor placed in front next to my PA monitor. I mike my monitor, and Whoaa there's that nice miked sound again. It sounds awful out of the speaker with way too much bite, but it cuts through and gives me real good volume without disturbing the other guys. And the PA guitar sounds really great. Question: Has anyone made the same experience with miking EV's/Celestions? And as a followup, for bigger gigs, could I replace one celestion in a 4x12 cab with an EV and mike that one? Anyone tried, any down sides?

On a side issue I found that the bass gets saturated in the closed cab when I crank it up. So now I am opening it using a techie friend to do the calculations.

Are you talking about EVM12L classic? If so they walk all over v30s as far as I'm concerned. They destroy the v30s in live situation & sound as good or better recorded, you just need to watch how much presence & highs you dial in on your amps. Just remember that with new speakers you need new amp settings, you can't just plug your amp in with your old settings to a new cab & base your conclusions on that. They do seem to get a little edgy in front loaded cabinets, no problem for rear loaded ones in my experience. To each his own, but all that fuzz on top of v30s I don't find attractive at all. On contrary I'm sure for that very reason many people dig them, it kind of adds some fake saturation to an already saturated tone.

I don't know the type, when I rebuild the monitor I'll find out. It must be from around 1980 though. The main difference with the Celestions seems to me that the EV has a much more narrow treble lobe, maybe it's just because it actually delivers more treble. Standing to the side makes the sound really nice. What about the idea of running a 4x12 cab with one EV and three Celestions? Any technical nonos? Anyone tried?

What about the Einie, does it behave differently to speakers than average? Can I expect to like the same old speakers and cabs with it?

Try some Tone Tubby Ceramic speakers. Peter and Olaf have said they sound wonderful.
I used own Boogies from 1975 through 1994 and used EV-12L speakers. Then I went to Marshalls, and finally Diezels in 2002.
I prefer the Celestions, but never was really fond of Vintage 30's. Peter sent me a V-30 in my Einstein combo, to which I added a Weber Beam Blocker and it sounds great now. Not as harsh or trebly head-on.
I also reduced the fuzz from the speaker by using lower powered preamp tubes. I don't need all the gain available on tap in the Einstein.
I will be getting a Schmidt for Christmas and plan to use the Ceramic Tone Tubby speakers for that amp. I haven't heard the speakers yet, but Peter's word is good enough for me.

What you say here is exactly what I use to think about front loaded mesa thiele with EVM12L, that said by that time I used to dial in a shitload of presence on my amps. EVs have extended top frequencies which can make you think that they are brighter in some way. If you dial in a lot of presence & higns, you can add some batting on the back wall of your cabinet, that will fix the brightness in front of the cabinet/speaker. I offer going to 12:00 on highs & presence & no batting needed. BTW, EVs are not bedroom speakers, you'll have to get your amp going for them to sound the way they should. You shouldn't have problems adding an EV or 2 to your 4x12, just make sure they are the same impedance as the speakers you are replacing.

As for the Einstein, I like it with EVM12Ls, in fact that's my current Einstein rig. Keep in mind that Boogies aren't nearly as thick & full as the Einstein, so the same exact cab could work just great with your Einstein.

I really dig the Tone Tubby speakers. Great tone & all the good points of the V30 & A Greenback..with alot more low end. But i can say that i thin NBarts clips with those EVs are quite tasty!!

Yep vintage 30's are very beamy. Most folks here like the ceramic tone tubbys, myself I love the alnico.Thay are the warmest speaker i've played in 40 years.I use an Einy, but don't play out that much anymore.I have a 4x12 slant marshall with 2 vintage's and 2 greenbacks in an x pattern.Since getting the alnico i use a vintae and alnico in a 2x12.Still can't decide if I'm going to use the bomb setup.Probally not L.O.L.Goo  d luck the Einy is awesome,as c-4 said tubes can change things a lot.

tell me more about the alnico please!

I have been deliberating over whether to add the alnico to the ceramic in my 2x12 or go with maybe the cannabis rex or just another ceramic though I like to mix speakers. it is quite expensive to "test" though.

I play metal so I not looking to lose punch and clarity. then again I only mic one speaker live so...

Dude don't go with the Rex.I had the chance when i bought mine to compare them on the spot in the same cab i.e a 1x12.I.M.O. I know taste is very subjective but if your playing a Diezel you've already chosen the best..I.m.o.The alnico has more everything.Just remeber if you buy new hemp it takes awhile to break in.Good luck Steve :thumbsup:Oh yeah if you want punch most around here like the ceramic tone tubby, myself I don't play that loud anymore and am looking for speaker break up sooner.Plus the alnico is 2x as expensive ,that's why I'm waiting to buy another alnico.

thanks!

yeah i think ill prolly go with the alnico and if i don't like it ill get a second ceramic.

I break them in pretty quickly with thrash metal albums and a stereo at our practice studio I usually let em play 24-7 for a week or so.

I only play music through them by artists I worship. It totally makes my rig sound better. maybe. ;)

Here is another speaker company you may or may not know about...
http://www.austinspeakerworks.com/Alnic ... 16133.html

I have heard good things about these as well from players already using them.
I am currently on the fence about using either two ceramic TT's, one ceramic and one alnico TT, two speakers from ASW, or a combo including a Celestion Gold.

It is a hard choice when you have no way to audition them yourself.
