California Governor Gavin Newsom just signed Senate Bill 73, turning it into a felony for federal agents or law enforcement to access voted ballots, voter rolls, or voting machines without a court warrant.
Signed quietly on May 27, 2026, the law slams the door on any outside scrutiny of the state’s election process ahead of the midterms. Newsom and his allies are selling it as “protecting democracy,” but it reeks of a blue-state power play to shield their voting system from federal oversight.
While Americans demand clean, transparent elections, Newsom is busy building legal walls to keep feds out. In a time of widespread distrust in how votes are counted, this move looks less like safeguarding ballots and more like hiding what happens inside California’s black box. Democrats aren’t taking any chances.
