InDEALLY wanted to check this out at NAMM but man my time was short.

$3999 CAD preorder with a June release date. Stoked!!

I've had a tough time looking between ENGL's Powerball2 and this Savage mk2. I'm not 100% sure that there's a $900 difference between them both. I don't really care about the second fx-loop or even about the midi. Ola's video is all we really have to go on and his expression's as he's playing the Savage seem sincere. I'm going with the Savage but wish there were more dealers around. I'd wait and try them both out. Seriously though, they're both great amps that i doubt will disappoint.

Well, it makes it a lot more versatile. It seems to have similar options to the Invader, Morse and even the SE, when it comes to switching.
The original Savage supported only the Z5 footswitch if I'm not mistaken. With the newer Z9 (which the Savage MKII should support), you can go either MIDI or with a stereo-jack cable, and still have a shitton of functionality.
And if the noise gates on the Invader and SE are anything to go by (I'm not sure about the PBII), they're 'smart' to that extent that if you turn it on, while on one of the gain channels, it automatically turns off if you switch to the clean channel and it automatically turns back on when going back to gain/drive.

With the Z9 in non-MIDI mode, you can program 2 functions on the function footswitches; you have 4 footswitches for the 4 channels and by double-pressing one of the channel's footswitches, you can switch Master A/B volumes.

My guess is that compared to the PBII, the Savage will sound less polished, more raw, while still retaining a high level of saturation.

One IMHO stupid choice that Engl *MAY* have made, is to make the Savage 60 MKII a full-size head instead of the 60cm/24" wide like the old one), if this picture is accurate and not a bad photoshop* of the 120MKII image:

*=knob positions exactly the same, as well as power tube sizing, so my guess is still photoshop. Just erased '120' and put '60' there.

With quite a few great high gainers in the 20"/24"-width camp (Randall Thrasher 50/Satan 50, EVH 5150III 50W, Mesa JP-2C, Driftwood Mini Nightmare, Soldano HR25, Marshall 2525H Silver Jubilee and 20W JCM800), keeping the Savage 60 in that camp would be a better choice, I believe. There's more and more shift to space-conscious amp-sizing.

I hear that ESP is looking to start distributing ENGL amps here in the U.S...That would be awesome. I've always wanted to try one, but never a store to check them out in. Always liked what I heard from clips.

Ed

That would be great. I have played a few here and there but I would love to have them more readily available stateside.

I'd never pay $4k for a Savage personally. You can grab a used MKI for $1200 and up and I bet it sounds 95% the same. If the extra creature features are worth it to a guy/gal, and you just have money to burn then have at it.

I am highly critical to Ola's demos. He processes everything so heavily that he makes just about anything tone-wise. I would like to hear it in person.

The features would not bridge the price gap for me either.

ENGL makes top notch stuff though.

I wish Ola would show off at least a little lead playing, I feel like that's an important part of showing what an amp can handle and he only plays rhythms (mostly downtuned).

For someone who is a lead guitarist he seriously underestimates himself on his lead playing. I grabbed his solo album and I really like it. It seems to suit him more than everything else he has put out. But yeah he tends to only play rhythms on amp demos unless there is some sort of effects to show.

I've been poor most my life and sure don't have money to burn now but haven't been to happy with my previous amps enough to stick with them except maybe a Model T, not that I'm looking for that sound now though. I narrowed down to Engl for what brand but now is the hard part. Not ever playing a Savage makes it hard to judge but from what I've read it seems to me to be what I'm looking for, hard hitting, heavy clearish tones with a killer lead capacity.

I've put a deposit down at a store but not 100% sure if I should go with the PB2 or S2. Both amps will satisfy but if I'm trading in my cheaper amp I want to be fully satisfied without looking back. There's a $900 difference between the two and I'm not sure there's the value. I don't need all the extra's the S2 have over the PB2 but I do think the S2 is clearer in it's high gain stages. The PB2 seems a little fizzy at times on demos. To top it off, locally a Fireball 100 just popped up for $1300!! The whole thing is driving me crazy!! How does someone commit in this kind of subject?

Well, a fireball 100 just popped up here in the forum for $1000, which is a steal. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=202633

Personally, if I really wanted a Savage I'd be looking into the Synergy modules unless a good deal on a used one came up.

I wouldn't bother with the Synergy module. While it comes fairly close it is not a 1:1 replica of the Savage's preamp, and you're missing out by not having the Savage's power section. When they come up used, they're great deals though.
