Ditto that as well. I'm currently in a 60-40% original/cover band. Each has its own positives and negatives. So it's nice to be in a band that's a decent mix. I also have two computer hard drives full of originals, as well as a file cabinet full of tape from older days, and hundreds of hours spent in a 2" tape, 24-track studio back in the early 90s. I dunno what point he was trying to make, as most cover band musicians that I've known also write lots of music. In fact, I've known VERY few MUSICIANS/ARTISTS over the years who didn't do both. Many of the younger generation has made it a point to never play in a cover band, but most of us older hands from earlier times always did BOTH.

Honestly, just as I don't think there's any positive outcome to amp or other gear manufacturers getting into debates with forumites online, I don't think there's really much to be gained from Bonamassa posting this kinda thing online either, but he's entitled to say whatever he wants nonetheless. I think he's a great player, and has great tone, but truthfully don't listen to his stuff that much. He did a clinic at MI awhile back where he basically just ran through his massive rig. The guy would sound 99% the same if he just played his Jubilee all night IMO. That's not to slag any of his other gear, just that it's mostly his playing not the gear, as it is with most people IMO.

I don't hang much on the TGP, but think there is some of the same mentality on all forums in the end. There are some GREAT players on here, and I really do enjoy listening to some of the clips/tracks they post. But there are also the guys on here/HCAF/TGP etc. that own a ton of nice gear, think their opinion is divine, and either never post examples of their playing, or they do, and sound like beginners. It's not the end of the world when that happens, though   And I dunno that Bonamassa should bother worrying about those kinda people, but sure, they're kinda asking to be called on it at the same time, I guess.

It's just the nature of anonymity in the end. None of these guys who've never been a pro musician in their lives would have the gall to say any of this kinda thing to Bonamassa (or any other pro) to their face. They know it's bullshit on some level, and that if they went head to head with him in a jam they'd have their asses handed to them so hard they'd be in tears. But from the safety of their homes it's really easy to talk shit and pretend you're an authority because they own awesome gear, etc. I think in the end, pro guys shouldn't really worry too much about what some guy on a forum says, but that's just my .02.

a doc/lawyer/CPA tgp'er that picks up a git in their 40s and plays blooze covers at a shitty bar a couple of times a month is not an artist. that was a portion of the point i was making. the other half was that pure cover players (those that dictate others material and do not create, nor have they ever) are not in a position, IMO, to criticize other's craft and art. technique or lack thereof, absolutely fair game.

i don't play in any type of band either cover or original. i played in original bands 20+ years ago, but never got into the idea of playing covers. i moved on and built a career to afford the lifestyle i was interested in. to me personally, there is no point in performing if i'm not expressing original ideas with my instrument of choice. present day, i'm nothing but a bedroom hack that records from time to time.

I agree with you. But then I disagree. One the one hand, who is ANY of us to criticize a household name (in guitar circles at least)? On the other, it's just an opinion and this is the place to express one's opinion. Plus... there are guys like freakin Kirk Hammett out there, worshiped by some/many as some kind of guitar god. I mean... if that fact doesn't BEG for someone to differ... then what does?

As far as the cover band deal goes... you're overthinking it. The FACT is, people LOVE cover bands. They can't afford to hire the original artists to play for their very own soire, and a DJ is just LAME. So they do the next best thing, hire a band of people with TALENT to give them a VERY REAL, honest interpretation of it. Most of the original artists that you give credit to either played in cover bands at one time, or at least cut their teeth on the songs of those artists. There are VERY FEW (if any) truly original artists out there. It is what it is. I've made a LOT of money over the past quarter century playing covers, which has enabled me to buy gear, and play more, to hopefully craft better originals. So on the one hand you say people shouldn't take shots at original artists, but on the other you take shots at those who enjoy paying homage to their musical heros and sharing that love of music with others. :aww:

I loved that line

You know in this day and age if someone picks up a guitar and does anything with it, its pretty cool. Way too many other ways to spend/ waste time.

With that said....an afternoon of slagging isnt the worst way to spend an afternoon.

i get what you're saying. i guess you've never run into a guy who's never written anything, yet considers himself an "artist" 'cause he plays STP covers for fat chicks on friday nights.

let me net it down. i hate upper-middle class white men that buy up a ton of gear, think that the blooze are the be-all end-all in guitar music, are mediocre at best and think they have any room to criticize other musicians.

better?

Having bloviated and said all that - you do realize that BB King sucks, right? And f' his vibrato, that sucks too! Nice guy though, I'll give him that much...

I'm jiggy with all of that! That's why I hang here instead of TGP. ;)

I'd love to see Letterman do a Top 10 Gear Page threads list. It would go something like this :

10) I'm having a Serious Midlife crisis - Should I use 8 or 16 ohm speakers ?
9) If you buy Chinese Celestions, you are a Communist
8) Stalking Robbin Ford via Twitter....
7) Should I buy a "Grab'n'Go" amp because I can't lift anything over 30 lbs ?
6) Is a $3000 boutique amp 33 % more boutique than a $2000 amp ?
5) Robbin Ford sighting update.....last seen with his family having a life
4) How do I mod my amp for LESS gain ?
3) 0.5 watt amps....complete overkill
2) Best Peavey amp that nails Dumble tone for less than $400 ?
1) 4x12 cabinets have been obsolete since 1977.....

Subjective suckage aside Rogue makes a good point. No one on this forum who slams Kirk (who is by far not my favorite player) is IMHO acting any better than the guys on the TGP that people here are making fun of in this regard.
