I feel that when playing "sets" songs. When I was in a 4 set cover band it was the worst because I had to play all 4 hours most every night and by the time I got through it there left no time for me to just dick around, learn new licks, try to take whatever thing I listened to that day at work (be it something like The Cramps to some Vai to some Somewhere in Time Maiden, you can tell I've listened to that album recently because I do that pick tapped descending scale you hear in a few songs on that album every chance I get).
Now I'm just in one band, we have our set, I warm up, play through that and if it's a day off or whatever I give myself projects. Like meanwhile I'll learn all of this album or live album to play to, or when we're writing and I'm listening to a lot more weird stuff than my usual Van Halen and Crue I'll try to take the weird Vai stuff or whatever and try adding it to a song
If I didn't develop that system and all I did was play that 45 minute set a few times then head to rehearsal to play that 45 minute set 2 or 3 times in a row I'd probably give it up too... I always try to add some new song or style to supplement playing the same 10 songs over and over
