EVH Iconic 40w EL-34 combo inbound. Rather not have bought retail but used is about the same damn price.
I cannot imagine anyone wanting MORE gain staging from one of these amps that a simple boost couldn't provide. There is this gizmo thing I would advise players that have to get or check out for these or honestly to look into these vs a lot of options out there......
I forgot what it's called exactly but essentially you put it into the socket of a 12AX7 and you get an extra gain stage because it lets you use two 12AX7 for any position you put it in.
So thats up to one or two extra gain stages for an Iconic from a valve for those who want if these can be used with the Iconic easily as they are used on other amps too. Hell makes me want to get an Iconic combo just for that and throw a Vintage 30, CreamBack or RedBack or Raven in there.

Well aside from more and some may want more especially more juice from valves...... You would get more boost, gain, less need for pedals and also more headroom one would imagine.I cannot imagine anyone wanting MORE gain staging from one of these amps that a simple boost couldn't provide.
I've tried both combos and the 6l6 head. Color is the only difference. The head is fine but I don't like the Iconic 412. I would get a better cab, used if you want to save money. So has anyone tried the head? Does it sound as good as the 40w combo? Are there any differences between the black and Ivory other than the color?
Why not if you could.......I've tried both combos and the 6l6 head. Color is the only difference. The head is fine but I don't like the Iconic 412. I would get a better cab, used if you want to save money.
The Iconic is good but part of that is the price. The 5153 is better and in no way do you need an additional gain stage mod. The Kid is smoking crack. I prefer a 5153 or 6505 but have serious thoughts of getting an EL34 Iconic head. I'm sure MANY will be happy with what the Iconic has to offer.
Also given the spacing between the 12AX7s on these there is more than enough room to use those gizmos that add tube driven gain stages......
That's what I would do if I had one as good as they are stock and they are good.
Do you mock me
You've obviously never played one they have more gain on tap than anyone could use. Also given the spacing between the 12AX7s on these there is more than enough room to use those gizmos that add tube driven gain stages......

I played one of first ones out of a box in Hollywood at the GC there and played more than a couple since...... It's got plenty of gain and as said its not necessary but it's an option for those who may want more gain, headroom, juice etc etc. You've obviously never played one they have more gain on tap than anyone could use.
well if you could and prefer it go ahead. sorry not to be rude calling you out, but people on forums can be so dogmatic on whether an amp is trash or needs 'x' so with that in mind I'd say it doesn't need more gain unless you want to experiment a bit.Why not if you could.......
I mean, I'm saying its good as is...... but maybe it can get better and those gizmos can get you more if you want more and are curios. 5153 ain't better really and in this case the cheaper Iconic IMO is the better amp without a doubt. It actually sounds more like a 5150 than the lll and more OG and can be more modern too but hey that's me.
There is this and well it's not needed exactly but the option is there and more glass/gain stages more tone is what I say *_*well if you could and prefer it go ahead. sorry not to be rude calling you out, but people on forums can be so dogmatic on whether an amp is trash or needs 'x' so with that in mind I'd say it doesn't need more gain unless you want to experiment a bit.
In my experience there's kind of a gain ceiling where things start getting a bit too blurry
My face whenever somebody says nobody needs that much gain...well if you could and prefer it go ahead. sorry not to be rude calling you out, but people on forums can be so dogmatic on whether an amp is trash or needs 'x' so with that in mind I'd say it doesn't need more gain unless you want to experiment a bit.
