My EVH 5150 iii mini has midi capabilities. I've been using my Line 6 Pod XT Live for effects. It sounds great, but it's a pain to press one button to get a delay, and then another button for chorus and then another button to change the channel. I went to GC this morning and bought a midi cable... after about 30 min on tinkering, I packed up the Pedaltrain and I was left with just the XT Live and amp.
Here are the 4 channels I created:
Channel 1 - heavy rock rhythm with just a tad of delay... calls up channel 3 on the amp... tons of gain
Channel 2 - marshall-type setting on steroids with a tad of delay... calls up channel 2 on the amp... not as much gain, but enough to throw some flames!!!!!
Channel 3 - clean with delay/reverb... i also have the ability to add a bit of chorus using the mod pedal on the xt live... the clean is never fully clean since the gain and eq is shared with channel 2, but it's ok if i roll back the volume of the guitar. channel 1 of the amp is used.
Channel 4 - calls up channel 3 of the amp with a level boost and bit of delay... chorus can be added too.
Channels 1, 2 and 4 all have the noise gate.
I love it!!!!
Are you running your pod xt live with the 4 cable method. I found one locally cheap and would love to ditch the pedals, put some delay in the loop and control the amp channels![]()
yeah... exactly how i am doing it. i have the xt live in the efx loop and just a 5 pin midi cable from EVH to XT Live

I’m new to the evh’s,(got mine 6 mos ago), but I love this little amp. It ended up replacing my Vht and has had some serious competition lately. The blue channel boosted or not is just killer and I’m getting a lot of versatility out of it. Went back to solid states for my modern metal band, and using the Evh for my ambient/tool/sabbath-ish band.
Just picked up some old sylvania and Phillips 12at7’s to try in it and see if I can make the red channel more useful.
What tubes did you try and what results? I’ve had a couple suggestions and going to try swapping v1 and v2 when I get back to the amp.

So, I wanted to try and change the following;
- more gain from the blue channel.
- thicken up the blue channel.
- reduce the gain on the red channel (increase the dials sweep)
- Make the channel volumes less "abrupt" for playing at low volumes.
The amp came stock with all JJs, and performed just fine other than my desired changes.
In V1 I put a "premium" Groove Tube (Sovtek) 12AX7. This opened the amp up a bit, added clarity overall and thickened the blue channel up.
In V3 I put a Ruby HG. This tube in the V4 spot made the red channel super high gain. Too much...but in the V3 it increased the blue channel gain just enough.
In V4 I put a Ruby 12AT7. This gave me an extra 3 notches of useable gain on the red channel's gain dial. I feel like the HG in V3 helped to retain the nasty edgy character of the red channel's gain too, because I only wanted to reduce the gain, and not necessarily remove it's voice.
In the PI I installed an old VHT labeled tube from my old 1993 GL100. I don't know what tube it is, but it is very low gain as it dropped the red channel gain to blue channel levels in the V4 spot.
In the PI spot it really smoothed out the sound and feel of the amp, and reigned in the output a tiny bit for my low volume use.
The OEM JJs stayed in all the other spots.
I wouldn't mess with 12AT7's in this amp. Seems to neuter the tone a bit. Lots of users have had success with AT7s in this amp. Myself included. 12AU7 if you REALLY want to bring DOWN the gain and UP the mids on the red channel, while adding lots of complexity. Instant Gary Moore "Oh Pretty Woman" tone.
Best way to subtly lower the gain in red (and make it milder) is to use 5751's. Those *are* drop-ins for 12AX7, at 60~70% gain.

I think that can be said for any preamp tube really. I had some vintage Ampex Bugleboys lying around (meant to go in an Art Pro VLA II tube compressor) and it made the tone a bit stale...less gain, sure, but kinda stale.
