Hello all! Newbie here in need of help. I recently picked up a new 100 watt 5153 head. (AMAZING AMP!!!)
I need some effects because I play in a cover band. I own a POD Pro xt and tried hooking it up through the loop and 4CM. As expected it sucked the life right out of the amp. Amp models where turned off and I tried adjusting the levels on the input and output of the POD.
I'm leaning towards picking up a TC Electronics G-System or Nova System. I also plan to use an RJM Amp Gizmo to avoid tap dancing.
My questions are:
Does anyone here own the same amp and use a multi fx unit? Hows the tone?
Should I consider scrapping the whole thought of a multi fx unit and go with some nice pedals and just run them through something like a GCX system?
Does anyone run this amp with a POD HD 500X with amp models removed? I was told this is a very affordable option. I think I would need audio samples to be convinced on that one.

BTW...I'd like to try to avoid going with a w/d/w rig because of the extra gear I'd have to lug around.
Nope. I can not afford a Diezel VH4 and a Axe FX 2. lol
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I use a Gmajor 2 in the loop without tone loss. Has been serving me very well for many years. I had to do a bit of tweaking of the input/output levels along with setting the kill dry function initially to get minimal tone loss and volume equality between patches. I haven't touched it since and it's been about 5 years. I've found that when people say they have tone loss it's usually because they haven't set up the GM2 properly. For what it's worth, I have pedals in a GCX set up and it works great. The GM2 is in a GCX loop also so I can completely take it out of the signal path, making it very easy to confirm that there is no degradation of tone associated with the unit.

I'm running the G-Major 2 with my 5153 as well. I use the mini amp gizmo to control the amp. Great setup

I'm using a POD HD300 and it works great. I can't comment on the XT, but there's minimal tone suck on the HD (though there is a little bit). You DO have to bypass the sims, but there's an "FX Only" button right on the unit, so that's pretty easy   . I'm just running it through the loop and it sounds good.

I run the exact setup you described. 2 EVH 100 watt halfstacks in stereo with a TC Electronics G-System with an RJM mini amp gizmo so the G-System can do my amp channel switching. Great sounding and easy to use set up.

The effect only switch they placed on the side was a great idea. I do like Line6 for their editing program. I just may have to a trip to my local guitar center and give it a try. I can always return it if it doesn't work out.
Thanks for the tip!

G-Major. Hmmm.... I forgot all about that cool little rack unit. Well with a couple of you guys making this recommendation It has to go on my list to check it out. I have a old band mate that works at guitar center. He told me to come in and buy what I want and if I don't like it he'll take it right back. PLUS, I get the friend and family discount! I can't go wrong.
Thanks guys! I really appreciate your input!!!!

Wow man! I got to give you a big thanks! I just read a bunch of your post and learned a ton info about your rig. Such as your global and boost settings and how you have it wired up. If this is the route I'm going, you saved me a hell of lot of confusion!!!! Here's a big question though, I'm not sure whats going on with the G-System. My buddy over at guitar center said they have not received any for a while and TC has been rather vague about giving them an estimated time of when they will be sending them out. I'm guessing they may have a new version coming out soon or there is some sort of production issue going on. Apparently Sweetwater is out too. I don't like buying something like this used so I may have to wait a while before I get my filthy mitts on one. I'm going to have more info on this tomorrow. But in the mean time, Thank you!! You're truly an asset to this forum!!!!!

I have a gmajor2 n mastermind midi pedal for sale

Thank you anyway. I try to avoid buying used just in case it doesn't work out I can just return it. Also from what I hear the mastermind is a nice switching unit but I'd most likely go with the ground control pro. I owned one before when it was made by Digital Music Corp. I ran a Rocktron Prophesy with it and loved it.

My pleasure. Glad to help. Haven't heard anything about a new unit. Would be cool though. I just picked up an Axe-Fx II and it will probably be taking over my fx duties in the near future.

Before you spend any money on a different processor try this first - ditch the 4CM and just run the POD Pro in the effects loop of the EVH. This way you will be using ONLY the EVH pre for tones and nothing in front that could be sucking tone. The POD has pretty good effects - so just turn off/bypass all the amp and cab modeling and just have what effects you want per channel. This should give you the desired results. If it still isn't jerking your chain.....then I would look at other processors.
