EVH tone is this his secret has it been overlooked

If there's a secret that's overlooked, it has nothing to do with gear. IMO. It has everything to do with attack and hand strength. Put a little mustard on it.

What happened to the Variac and other theories?
How about the stories of EVH going into a random studio with a random guitar and nailing his tone (ie Beat It)?
How many poor dead horses have been beaten in the last 30 years over that tone?
I'm surprised people still care about this

I totally agree with this. I have never understood the obsession with "nailing" some guys tone from 30 years ago. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery though, I guess.

agree 100% with this.

We can stir the pot all we want on this Jose thing.. don't forget the differing views on the metro forum. I remember one fella saying he spoke with Jose before his death and Jose said he didn't mod a thing on Ed's plexi because it sounded great. Jose told him Ed used a "distortion" box.. so everyone ran out and tried micro amps and MXR disto +.... then another fella said he had it on authority from Jose that Ed reamped etc etc etc... maybe Jose lied to everyone too! Yep, the couple of hundred he made from Eddie to do the mod he swore he would not reproduce and thus never made the thousands upon thousands he could have made from sharing the tone secrets!!! Oh boy I am starting to sound ridiculous..... the guy flat out just had a great sounding amp and chops and studio magic. Everything else is just icing.

I recall reading an interview with Jerry Cantrell. He was on tour (solo or AIC I don't remember) and EVH showed up one day. Ed was really impressed with Jerry's sound and asked to play, so of course JC let him. How did he sound through a G&L and Jerry's gear? Just like EVH always does. So I'm on board with Eddie just sounds like Eddie.
Something like this may have happened at some point but this is essentially a guitar urban legend. I have heard this story like fifty times with a different guitarist every time and the first time I heard it was well before AIC was even formed. Ted Nugent is a popular choice, Billy Gibbons, too. I've heard it backwards, too, where the other guitarist wants to play Ed's gear to experience some Brown sound but alas, he sounds like the Nuge, Lynch, DiMartini, whoever he is on that day. In fact, I like the backwards version better.

Also, I question the accuracy of any promo shot being representative of what was actually happening in the studio.

That said, Brown sound == a dimed marshall and a few stompboxes combined with a brilliant player. Essentially, anyway. Although I think all the speculation and sleuthing is kind of fun. The AFD Marshall story is really cool/fun, too.

Can we talk about how to get EVH's bank account? I would much rather have that than his tone

when Carlos Cavazo recorded some track at Casbah Studios in fullerton, the old drunk there chaz told me he had to have his wireless on because the trimmer/buffer on the back gave him a boost that worked perfectly with his marshall and pedals. soooo ???? could be.

but then again,

I've heard enough people touch the various eras of EVH tone going straight into an amp that I can't imagine spending time worrying about all those details.
I'm gonna have to agree with you.

Steve

That studio photo is from van halen II,there are no studio photos of the band for van halen 1.Master volume mod added by Jose Arrendondo to Edwards plexi toward the end of the 78 tour.

I've never understood this reaction , on a gear forum, about Eddie's tone. I know it's been beaten to death, but it IS kind of fun to speculate and argue your theory against someone else's etc...at least it is for me.

Good! Finally got my amp company started and my first design to market. Ask brudda Pat about it - he played it at the LA Amp Show:
