"the sound" was stock amp at ~ 89v w/bias cranked into a single 4x12. 2 echoplexes and a Boss eq slamming the front end sometimes. That's it.

thats exactly what mike solando says here at about 8:30

Agreed, that was a really fun listen...and FWIW, I have the Metro Friedman 12301, which has the built in Variac mode. The other day, I decided to run it that way into an actual Variac, set to 100 VAC. Good times  ...even more spongy!

I think Eddie would get great tone out of a Crate. I sort of missed the EVH boat way back when other than learning his tricks in Eruption/Spanish Fly as I preferred the darker style Randy Rhoads with Ozzy. Fast forward to a few weeks back I bought VHI and VHII and have been listening closely to his recorded tone as well as YT clips his early live tone from 78. I think the majority of his sound comes from his attitude, his hands and the way he attacks with the picking hand. He's an incredible dynamic picker and his tone is not drowned out with abundances of gain, its fairly clean distorted tone to my ears. Sometimes a bit top heavy and bright but it sits well with the bass.

That band was tight as fuck, Roth a great vocalist - front man, background vocals nice and Eddie was on fire. Also what I think is cool is a lot of the tracks are 3-4 minutes and refreshing to me. They say a lon in a few minutes and the guitar solo isn't 279 bars long ;)

You don't need nearly as much preamp gain when you play that loudly.... The sustain is already there from the volume. That quote that floats around from evh (paraphrasing) "you want tone? Turn up the volume, volume is tone...." is spot on.

Although I have a variac'd plexi, you don't really need one.

In fact, you don't even need a tube amp to get old Eddie tone... just a SD SH-5, a good amp plugin and some studio magic:

Sorry man, not hearing it with the SH5. Everyone always compares it to the DSD, but I just don't think the mids are remotely close. When I listen to the early albums I hear DSD and MMs all over the place; can't think of one song where its apparent he was using a Duncan Custom.
