F.U.C.K. vs Balance Tone: SLO-100, 5150 Reissue, or x88ir for the ultimate '90s Ed rig?

5150 cabinets with Sheffield's? I didn't even think Eddie used those.
I've never played Peavey 5150 cabinet with Sheffields. Is there a Celestion speaker the Sheffield can be compared to?

PV Shefields are utter shit as is most PV guitar speakers.

Balance has fantastic tone,
Balance had the best time for sure.

Amsterdam is so fun to play

I am nothing but a worthless troll

Agreed.

According to an interview with Dave Friedman he delivered 4x12 cabinets( when Dave worked for Andy Brauer's) with G12T75's and G1265's to 5150 studios when Ed was using the SLO and Dave says Ed preferred those speakers with the SLO.

That is what I remember too.

SLO100 (not the 30) or 5150 would be my picks. If budget was a concern, 5150. To me, the SLO30 is not the same as the 100. I didn't like the overdrive channel on the 30.

I 100% agree. Sheffields can sound fantastic. People just look for excuses to spend more money than they have to.
I gigged with a Dual Rec through an MS4x12 with Sheffields in the 90s. Sounded pretty good. Could get a little honky in the mids, but it was workable.

I wouldn't stress too much here. Choosing between an SLO or 5150 is probably the least impactful choice you can make if you're building a rig trying to get Ed's tone from that era. Either will easily get you there. Within the same rig, playing that kind of music, the differences between them are vanishingly insignificant. Like, the SLO will be maybe 5% softer and more mid-emphasized, and the 5150 will be 5% sharper and wider bandwidth'd.

If I was building the rig and had to choose, I'd go 5150 though.

The SLO is a WAY better amp to me. Most of what you're hearing at the beginning of Judgement Day is the SLO. They may have blended a 5150 prototype back in at lower levels, but the 5150 doesn't sound like that. It doesn't have that "wangy" overtone. The high-mids and highs aren't as clear.

The Depth Mod... I never used that, and both of my SLOs had it. If it acts the same way on the 30 as it does the 100, it won't sound the same. The Depth Mod fattens up EVERYTHING. I only found it usedful if I had the Lead channel gain below 10:00. Other than that, MEH!

I like the original 5150 block letter and script versions. Neither one is anywhere near an SLO to me.

Of course, these are just my opinions. There are lots of people here that feel the oppositie way about it. No one is wrong.
Did you have both 30 and 100 versions? How would you compare them?

If you go SLO over the 5150 you may want to check out the Mezzabarba Mzero amp. If has a little tighter low end and sharper attack but still SLO DNA.

MZero into greenback 4x12 cabinet

Here in Canada I don't find these very easily.

Ouch - this is really good
He's( Dan Leal) using an eventide micropitch and the SDE3000 EVH delay and greenback EVH cabs. I don't know what he's using for the two wet cabs power amp but pick an amp you like.

I hear great things about the new Avantone S/S Mosfet power amps built like the older mosfet in the 80's,90's and 2000's. The old Crown stereo power amps are damn good as well, built like tanks and pretty reasonable.

I have the SDE3000 EVH and the H90. I have been running the UA Anti Pedal but looking for a real amp. Haven't decided on the speakers, I have a mesa boogie Mark V around that is going to fund whatever I am going to buy :)

The W/D/W VH is a really fun setup to play. I'm still running my Eventide Pitchfactor and Boss D500 with the SDE 3000 algorithms in my setup, love it. Good Luck building yours!:2thumbsup:
