What's your favorite 101b settings? I'm not talking about gain/eq/excursion, etc. . .I'm talking about Full Power/Half Power and Pentode/Triode??

I usually keep it on full power, Pentode. I play hard rock and go for a fat, warm woody rock tone.

What do you guys think about the half power or triode settings? I know I have to switch to 8 ohms if I go half power, but do I need to change ohm output if I play in Triode??

Hmmm, my 101b doesn't have the Class A switch.

For Full Power, in Triode, what OHM setting would I use with a 16 ohm cab?

For Triode (Old Style), you don't need to adjust anything else.

If you want to go with Half Power, you'd want half of the cabs rating...so 8 ohms.

Sonically, what's the difference between Pentode and Triode? I know that it basically changes between 5 elements and 3 elements working within the tube, but how does that affect the tone?

Oh, I forgot to mention...it's good practice to put the amp on standby, before moving any switches in the back. This isn't something you need to worry about with the front switches.

Triode is smoother, sweeter, warmer & darker than Pentode. It is softer and less aggressive.

YES (NEW/pentode = more punch and fullness) OLD/triode is as stated above. My Ecstasy must have some pretty nice chinese tubes because I keep my Red channel gain at 9 o'clock (in B1 with Pres-B at 2:30) and has plenty of gain for solos!

I rarely use HALF power...but it will soften the tone and feel some.

CLEAN channel (ALERT). Put master at 2 o'clock and use the GAIN as your master volume. Makes it much more full and Fendery sounding!!

Yeah there's a thread somewhere which explains many settings, including how to make the green channel sound like the Fender's circuit it is inspired by

Yeah, I've known about the clean channel method for awhile -- sounds really good. I just have a gig this weekend, and haven't used the XTC in a while, and wanted to insight to the Pentode/Triode thing. I think I'm going to try Half Power/Pentode.

So if I switched to half power, I'd need to run my 16 ohm cabinet at 8 ohms? Man I've been running it at 16!! What about two 16 ohm cabinets at half power? What selection would I need to flip on the back of my amp?

Yes, one 16 ohm cab at half power would be 8 ohms on the back of the amp. Two 16 ohm cabs would be 4 ohms.

I leave mine in half power and old mode pair it with a Bogner slant 4x12 with V30's

How would you describe the tone you're getting in that setting Shawn?

Man I must be crazy.. I've never seen that documented anywhere but it does make total sense. Is there a distinct difference in sound in doing so?

I don't think you'll hear a difference in switching ohms, but you'll be saving your output tranny from getting damaged, and you'll be getting the proper output of the amp.

I'm not good at describing tone but I'll try   . I primarily use in this mode to whack the power down a bit so it is a little more manageable for home studio use. I'm into 80-90 hard/rock/melodic metal and neo-classical so no de-tuning or trying to make a guitar sound like a freakin bass or chaining 12 dirt pedals for da brootlz gain. I can obtain VH/RR/Yngwie/Gary Moore type of tones stuff but I like it little darker sounding and I get that with the 101B in this mode at low moderate volume levels. It just feels good, tight, sensitive to touch and volume knob manipulations.

OK, so my main reason for using the Old (Triode) setting was for volume. The old setting has significantly less volume then the New (Pentode) setting.

Friday I used my normal Full/Old/Class A setting and all was great.
Saturday I tried Full/New/Class A. I'd say the core tone did not change. The amp became more forward and punchy. A little tighter, and much louder. It was a nice change. I think I'll keep it like this for a while...

Shawn where do you live in Texas bro! We need to put together an amp feat!
