So many to choose from.... and it's tough at times for me to discern "tone" from just what I think of how the guitarists are playing.

Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry ... articulate, awesome cleans, just a very "fitting" sound for what was being played on that disc. (also a fantastic drum sound)

As for a live sound, it has to be Adam Jones.

Good call on Fates Warning. I had completely forgotten about Parallels, but the sound on that CD is so three-dimensional and the guitar sound is phenomenal. I have the CD here somewhere, but I remember the liner notes specifying that the CD was recorded with some sort of "Q processing" or something. The guitars sound like they are in absolute perfect tune and some of the minor and non-5th chords sound completely incredible.

fully agree

Check out OVERKILL in the song COMA off of the album Horrorscope.
That has got to be the MEANEST tone when that guitar riff kicks in after the slow intro.

"Stuck here in this COMAAAAAAAAA" *bark bark* :D
Blitz had the quintessential thrash voice, and the guitar sound on all of Horrorscope is thick, aggressive and cutting. It`s a little like AJFA- Sounds scooped, but isn`t that mid-sucked anyway.

That Guitar Player Merrit Gant has his guitar lesson/repair studio up the street from my house

paul gilberts live tone with the 3 laney 2x12's and GH100L cranked wide open.

so badass and silky smoothe

I can't believe nobody suggested "10,000 Lovers" :D (great tone BTW!)

My reference tones:

Warren D - Lay it Down, You're in Love
Lynch - BFTA and ULAK
Nuno - first album (Mutha...)
VH - II and Fair Warning
Accept - BTTW
Scorpions - LAFS

More recently, I've been digging Primal Fear's tones.

I'm kinda old school but Accept wasn't mentioned at all except on the post above. Wolf Hoffman got a wicked tone on those albums. Sounded like a Mack Truck! Crushing!

What was he using on that album??
So damn Heavy and brutal!
Love to have that tone!

I was just visiting Merrits shop to buy some short cables and ect..
He has his Overkill guitar rig by his work bench...

All of the leads on that album were done through a Bone stock LANEY AOR head..
All of the other guitar stuff was done through a ADA preamp and Carvin FETT Power amp...

their tone's are hit and miss - some of the later material is better than the earlier stuff. either way - primal fear is just awsome

Carcass - Swan Song
Judas Priest - British Steel
Accept - Balls to the Wall
Ratt - Invasion of Your Privacy

Favorite non-metal sounds:

Cross Canadian Ragweed - Garage
Gov't Mule - Dose

It really isn't anything special or custom he had that stuff set up through 2 Marshall straight cabs..

I did tell him there was talk about Horrorscope on here he said that is awesome...

He is refretting my ESP MII next week, he is also doing some great custom guitars I was impressed..

I kind of have to thank you guys I forgot he was up the street,
Had I not read about it here I wouldn't have remembered..
