I can´t stand that squashy guitar sound at all. It´s heard everywhere on the record. Just terrible IMHO.

What people don't think about in examples like this is the mix pre, the mic(s), phase alignment plugins, the board itself, the eq from the board itself, outboard EQ and compression...there is like a million fucking things done to these tracks before you hear this example.

If you posted the RAW track, it would still have the mic and the EQ and the preamp, blah blah blah.

You want this tone? Get all that stuff.

Otherwise just enjoy playing 1 or two amps at a time and being a loud badass.
Well said my friend

Finding - and matching - the tones is nearly impossible... In the making of videos you can see that hetfield had used the thre amps (IIC+, Wizard, VH4) on all songs. Well as far as there are making offs until now... but you have even in HD no chance of seeing the settings of the amps and/ or what's happening between the amps and the final record...

I personaly think, you can hear all three amps. I own a IIC+, owned a VH4 and find sounds from the garage which are Wizard heavy.

The tones changed over the years. but I like the Hardwired tone... as for the comparison videos with old tones... there are a few good out there. I generaly think that the modern tone suits the songs best. I like Confusion with black album tone though... that's cool
