I'm going to say Kill 'Em All. There is a rawness about it that I really like. It's not head and shoulders far above any other particular Metallica albums, it's just the one I grab first when I am in the mood.

Stuff after the 'black' album is hit or miss for me, but there are a few songs that I do like quite a bit, so I can't totally write them off. I suppose this brings up the whole discussion about 'new' vs. 'old,' but I don't blame them for shifting gears. I'm also perfectly willing to accept the idea that as I get older, I become a little more resistant to change. I (try) and like a lot of new stuff, but as the years roll on, I find myself (seemingly) liking less and less new stuff. There is also the possibility that 'new stuff sucks,' but I dunno if I can pull off that statement. :D

listening back just now, i'm kinding thinking that ride the lightening and kill em all haven't dated too well

AJFA i always struggled with, excellent album but way too dry a mix..

To me, Metallica's last album was MASTER. They were gone after that.

How come you don't like the ...AJFA, Daniel? Blackened, ...AJFA, One, Harvester of Sorrow, Frayed Ends of Sanity are amazing. The shitty production fits the album's pissed off mood so well too. :)

I actually agree. It adds a harsher, sterile, stark feeling to songs that fit that template. It makes Dyers Eve one of my favorite songs of theirs.

This is difficult because every record they made is great on its own.

Wooooo that is heavy.
I think have to go to for Load and for the Black Album because it is the most complete package.Heavy sound, flexible, the songwriting. These Songs are really deep.Mid Tempo Songs that kicks ass.I mean you don´t need a fast song to be heavy.Listen to Until it sleeps or The outlaw torn.Great Songs. Also the Black Album. It is almost the same.

St. Anger is great too but unfortunately the most get it.They don´t understand that this Record is a Therapy for them around that time.Okay the snare sounds like shit but songs like My World, Sweet Amber, The Unnamed Feeling are great and really kicks ass.

Ride the Lightning, Master Of Puppets and the Black album

Black Album. Sad But True totally rules. Saw them in Oct 09. The entire arena exploded and you could not hear the band signing when they hit those first 5 notes..... Broken Beat and Scarred was the other total slammer. They beat the shit out of that song....

definitely MoP.

As far as the Black album goes.. I distinctly remember when this came out, and everyone I knew, including myself, recoiled in horror at how commercial it was. Looking back at it now, after some of the other stuff they released, it seems rather heavy.

I can't blame them for wanting to go in a new direction however... play the same stuff long enough, you're gonna get really tired of it, really quickly.

Tough call between Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Creeping Death and Disposable Heroes are awesome.
+100 on this!

It's hard to choose one, but it has to be between the 4 first ones..

I agree I'd be good with anyone of the first four albums

Kill Em All by far for me. I like the old school, raw, urgent, out of control vibe of that album.

RTL comes in second and I really don't care for anything after that.

I'm gonna go with "And justice for all"
only because it was a battle between James and Lars.
All the different changes in the songs, and every time
I hear it,it reminds me of body parts going threw a wood
chipper, don't ask me why,it's just what I think.
MOP runs a close second.
And Justice was my favorite tour,it was insane.
