Looking into this amp to A/B with my Mesa for cleans, and use for mid-gain tones in the non-metal band. What's the verdict on this thing? Loud enough for the stage without losing headroom? I'd like to be able to bounce between pickups for clean and dirty tones if I could.

Also looking at the Vox AC4, which I would prefer. I'm sure it won't have enough volume/clean headroom for the stage though.

What about the Super Champ XD? 15 watts vs 5 on the Vibro. Should give you a little more vol and headroom.
That's actually what I meant   I was looking at both on Sweetwater at the same time.

Hey Man,

I've got the Vibro Champ XD, it's an incredible little amp for the money at $189 or whatever I paid it's a steal, it's got great low level volume tones, however, I find as you crank it up it does have a tendency to get a little harsh/brittle and loose head room obviously. I'm not 100% on this but I don't think theres any pre amp tubes in the pre amp section, that it's all solid state, that being said for 5 watts it does get reasonably loud. I don't know if I'd trust the 15 watter in a band setting though, I've had louder amps that can get buried, and the other thing too is even if they are loud enough you lose dynamic range because your digging in really hard to get them to show up. I suppose it depends on what your doing, but I honestly don't think I'd use either of these for a band setting. If you get a few hundred more you can just get an old bassman head I think I've seen those go for as low as like $500 right?

Dallas

One more thing: I don't know if the controls are the same on the Super Champ, but the Vibro has no mid level and no presence which I find very annoying, only having low and treb to adjust and not being able to EQ a hump in the midrange really hurts it for me in any kind of group setting, I use it 90% of the time as a solo practice amp and occasionally with people in a small ensemble setting.

The Super has one 12AX7 in the pre-amps section, which I assume is a PI, with the rest being solid state. Power amp is 6V6.

If anyone has any other suggestions, please bring them!

Yea the vibro has 1 12ax7 as well which I assumed to be the PI for the EL84 I think is whats in there.

Are you just looking for a strictly clean combo amp?

Who makes a nice clean to mid-gain combo on the cheap? There has to be something out there for me.

You may want to checkout the Fender Pro jr. I just picked up one used for $150. 15 watts, all tube, nice cleans as you would expect for a Fender, and some cool mid gain tones as you crank it a bit. Much better tone than I was expecting to get in that price range.

Damn did you get a hell of a deal there! Whenever I see them, it's up in the $400 range. $350 is the lowest I've ever seen them.

Nice score!

Just put a bid down on a Hot Rod Pro Junior III
Nevermind..5 minutes before the auction ended, I was informed via e-mail my parents stole all of my money from me, so I couldn't pay for it. No birthday presnet for me again this year, woo. So glad I worked my ass off to make that money for myself.

another good clean amp is a peavey classic, should find pretty cheap. as well as the crate vintage club stuff
