What speakers/cab and any kind of boost?

Wow! Thanks guys. I should make my wife read this. :D I'll try and answer any questions.

First of all, yes I am using a boost. I always use a boost, no matter what amp I'm playing. It's just how I grew up doing it.

When I use single coils I use the DOD YJM 308 which I had modified by a guy on the Plexi Palace, Splawn Fans Forum and Metro Amp board who goes by the name of Outlier and his last name is Evosevic. I also have an Analogman modded YJM308 but I prefer the Evosevic.

I am really, really new to playing single coils. I have spent a billion hours messing with different humbuckers and amps and pickups and pedals and mods and tubes etc etc etc trying to get my humbucking tones right. I just threw some basic Duncan SSL-1's in a Warmoth strat style and plugged it in one day with a stock YJM308 and thought that sounds pretty cool. Then I read about mods to the 308 to make it more like an original OD 250 and sent in both my YJM's. I got them both back and they were way better than the stock one.

In this guitar I wanted slightly hotter so I put in a Duncan SSL-5, plugged it in and thought it sounded cool. I barely mess with my tone at all with single coils. I plug in and play. With humbuckers I make myself mental but i am mainly a humbucking sort of guy. In this clip I planned on using a different OD for when I switched to the bridge pickup because i don't like the DOD's with humbuckers very much. But when I did the take and played it through to a level I was happy with, I knew it could be another hour before I got the humbucker dialed in and chose a boost pedal and played it as well so I just left it.

Holy shit, that ends my gig posting vids.

You Curt flat out destroy! This is why I buy my Charvels from this man

Damn that sounded good. Nice job!!

Wait a minute...Whats the Marshall below the Splawn? Jose?

The Marshall below the Splawn is not a Jose Marshall. It's a JIM Marshall. It's a 1970 Super Trem. That's why it has two extra knobs. And yes I know, the Super Trem is the perfect one for modding because it has two extra, useless knobs on it. :D

Yes. They used to call it the Duncan EVH but changed the name to the '78

That was awesome Curt!! :rawk: Killer playing and i now seriously want to come over and steal that guitar :D

What's up with the weird mids though?

:hys:

The weird mids and stiffness and sterility are what make the Splawn's so difficult to solo on. I was trying to highlight that defect in them with this clip and I think I showed that overcoming those weird mids AND playing a solo on the Splawn is near impossible.

Hoyt,
Thanks man. We really miss having you around the shop. It was a blast when it was you, JMR, Jay and I. Talk about some sick guitar playing going on in those lesson rooms between you and JMR.

You should hear the double tracked Splawn rhythms behind the solo. Freaking huge!

Scott,
Thanks brother. Your coolness will be missed by me this week at NAMM. Better yet, why not fly out for NAMM and take your new guitar home with you? I'll even help you tackle Steve Vai this time.
