Very fun read. Not worth getting offended over even if you disagree IMO

I TOTA11Y DISAGREE!!! THIS IS AN 0UTRAG3!!!!

I would say that MOST songs are constructed out of simple barre chords or traditional first position chords. I see too many people trying to use contortionist type chords because, "This can't be just simple barre chords......right?????"

The Life of the Party

Are you that dude that pulls an acoustic guitar out at parties and sings songs? Go fuck yourself. No one wants to hear you stumble over a Dave Matthews or a John Mayer song while you eyefuck girls. Leave the iPod on and grab another beer, you cretin. Also, you're probably not playing the song right: Every song on the planet was not constructed solely out of barre chords.

:hys:

My favorite part.....

"Perhaps you have a vibrato that sounds like a goat trying to mount Diane Rehm as she conjures the ghost of Katherine Hepburn with a ouija board?" :hys: :hys:

That was my favorite quote as well.

It's pretty hypocritical to say that anyone who judges is a boring player when the entire article is judgmental. Funny how he devalues technique and then posts a video of Thurston Moore scratching his sex toy along strings, which is the aural equivalent of photographing a plastic crucifix in a jar of piss and calling it art. I'm sorry, but if you think that sounds good, you deserve to be hit in the face with a framing hammer.

I dunno, I thought my sex toy quip was pretty lighthearted... Guess it didnt't take. Anyway, I've noticed a recent trend where individuals in various forms of digital media are making an effort to make the music that appeals to them seem of greater value while simultaneously devaluing and taking shots at other forms. Recent examples include that Spin magazine article that included Skrillex in the top 100 guitarist list and the Yngwie video where he was subtly mocked by the douche who was interviewing him. Maybe it has always been done, but I wonder what kind of effect mass digital media will have on musical history. To me, it seems like a lot of revisionist drivel. I dunno, just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt.

I don't think this is a recent trend. The closed mindedness of people when it comes to music (subjective art) and all things subjective, but in particular, guitar players (and musicians in general) is unfortunate. Lots of tearing down that goes on both towards the artists themselves and those who like them.

Opinions and assholes - everyone's got one and if it ain't yours, it typically stinks.

I know what you mean, I'm just saying that it seems like there are so many more outlets for criticism today and that it will have a negative affect on the way people perceive music in the future especially if the critics have an agenda.

That's true, but unlike assholes, I enjoy hearing people's opinions.

awesome =0

some great bits in there

"Play like you have something to say, not something to prove."

I'm not sure about this list. I'm a shitty guitarist and these don't really fit me.

That was the only sentence in the article that grabbed me. When I see that sentence, I think of Dave Gilmore and I do aspire to mostly leave my technique behind and just be tasty like Dave.

Most of the rest of the editorial seemed like some hipster from Rolling Stone Magazine wrote it to me. I'll pass on soaking-up Thurston Moore's latest piece de resistance thanks...

Speaking of "shitty guitarists"... I was trying to find some decent YouTube demo vids of the Marshall 2203X earlier this week and dayumm... is just any fat kid with a friggin video camera and a basement full of gear whoring himself out on YT these days? I guess that I was "scarred" during my formative years as a guitar player (early 80s), because despite playing, teaching, recording, and gigging nearly every genre for the better part of the past 3 decades... I'm still very loathe to put my stuff out there for fear of being judged harshly by players. Because despite the fact that I know I am NOT a shitty guitar player, there are plenty of great players who make me feel like I am at times.

Evidently, growing-up in the post-grunge age COMPLETELY removed any such inhibitions that many younger players have and they'll proudly post-up EPIC FAIL demo vids just for the sake of being seen by someone. Do I thank Kurt Cobain for that, or Paris Hilton? Used to be that you worked your ass off practicing so as NOT to suck -- especially before performing in front of others. Now epic fail is evidently a badge of honor.

Meh...sounded more like a swipe at guitarists in general than at shitty guitarists. I mean, I'm not a great guitarist but I don't really fit any of those 5 listed.

I'm with you on that.

Yes the article has some good points, and I'm sure it's meant to be cheeky. If not, then the author is just trying to be overly hip and trite, thus borish.
I agree with the writer that some of the coolest music and guitar work isn't very technical in nature. Early Blues guitar was simply handed down and around and eventually a form was created.

Knocking other players is not my thing. It's too bad that a lot of guitar players are so judgmental of other players as if playing music is a competition.
Question: How many guitar players does it take to write a solo for a song?
Answer: 1 to write and play the solo, 6 more to say they could write a better solo, and 6 to claim they play it better. :)
