Easier Guitarists that Sound Great

All anyone wants to buy guitars and learn guitar for is to copy some other guitarist and it while it's totally normal, at a certain point it makes my eye twitch

Funnily, I built my Gilmour Strat specifically to play Gilmour shit with, but once I started playing it I was drawn to entirely differently and tones than Gilmour’s and realized I was starting to etch out my own thing within that Strat space, which I’d never felt I was coming close to with humbuckers and high gain amps. The more I post-92 metal tones now, the more they start blending in together unless it’s someone like Dime or Cantrell.

This is actually been the point of my focus lately, where I’m going next with my music and playing. I’m playing more than I have in over 20 years and I have the eagerness to play like I did when I was 15 again and it’s not metal fueling me anymore. This is why I got into lessons with Techdeth, I knew the only way forward for me was to learn WTF I was doing theory wise so I can dictate a bit more than stumble upon.

I can figure out almost any rock/metal/shred solo by ear, and have been able to do so for many years. It developed from years of jamming and studying entire albums and some tab, although today, kids get unlimited free pro level guitar lessons and learn famous solos step by step long before they have any idea what a fucking SONG is or how to even get into the mindset of thinking about writing a song or having their own style.

There are WAY more newbs/preteens/teens/squids today who can copy someone else's riffs or solos perfectly today in mommy's basement than ever because of youtube. And they don't even know how to create a signal chain, they just buy modeling crap and zoom the menus for an EXACT COPY of the other guitarist's tone!

But so what?

Mindless parrots. 🦜

And as soon as anyone on this site has mastered all of the '80s guitarists in the OP, which means nailing the FEEL and authority of those guitarists, and writing great songs with some of that style, let's hear it. They are more impressive musicians to me than most any current YT wonders....

So…..you learned how to play cover songs like the kids these days do, but THEY’RE the mindless parrots because they learned how to play cover songs as well? Or they’re only mindless parrots because they learned via Youtube? Or are they mindless because they can load up a preset on a plugin they spent $100 on, rather than saving up for the physical gear and trying to recreate the tones of their heroes, like 99.9% of new guitarists do?

And does Youtube just blast the ability to play into their hands? Like Youtube and modelers removed the need for anyone to practice, they just watch a video and have the physical capability right away?

But then the kicker comes at the end, where you request members of RigTalk become mindless parrots of music that was popular 40 years ago as if the only way to prove themselves worthy is to parrot your preferred genre of music.

Why the fuck would I want to parrot guitarists I’m not even interested in, or write music that was popular when I was born? How does that make anyone original?

I’d expect that kind of comment from somebody that’s chasing Phillip Sayce tones.😂

Today’s generation is interested in nothing but being a parrot, and showing their parrot skills on YouTube.
They can’t write any music worth a shit, most of them aren’t even in bands, or even know what it’s like to be in a band and to play with other musicians.
And 99% of them don’t have a style that they can call their own.

Do you find yourself talking to the youth of today often to actually know these things, or is this just a blanket “I assume to know these things because this is the feeling I get when I watch Youtube videos and don’t like what I see?”

There’s a fuckton of guys on this forum who have been playing for years I don’t hear jack shit from, there’s millions of dollars of gear on this forum, where’s all the original tones and crazy good music? Why shit on the younger generation that won’t ever once attempt to write music for you, when you’ve got ample peers all around you who would be the ones writing music closer to your liking who can get the blame for not stepping up?

Are YOU in a band? Where’s your music that’s worth a shit? Do you have a style you can call your own? How is it the younger generations responsibility to satisfy these things for you, if you have not satisfied them for yourself?

You should try on some thicker skin and drop the smugness if you want to survive the internet. After all, you are an "influencer", yes?

I play shows with the "youth of today" (as you put it) every weekend, where I talk to some of the only youth playing in original bands. Because I play in original bands.

They all realize that this is a problem with peers at their age.

I complain about it with (older) people on the forum too - especially the guys with millions of dollars of gear.

I'm in multiple original bands, which I post all the time. With a fairly distinctive style of my own. And I have satisfied all of your arbitrary requirements, which means I'm allowed to shit on the younger generation for not satisfying them.

I understand a lot of us sound like "get off my lawn" old men when today's youth and music comes up but the fact of the matter is, they NEVER had to listen to a song a thousand times by picking up the needle or rewinding a cassette to learn something. The NEVER had to sit and wait for the latest issue of Guitar World or Guitar Player to come for the tab and interviews. And for the most part, they sure as hell don't know about load ins at 4- 5PM, playing 3 1 hour sets, sometimes to empty bars in the middle of winter, and then loading out until 3-4 AM. Sitting in band rooms for hours writing originals and the consequent fights from disagreements. Singers quitting the day you go into the studio to cut demos because the drummer was fucking his wife. That's this shit that builds character and creates memorable music. I'm not saying my shit made me famous, but there were times at gigs people were singing it. That's good enough for me at this point. There are some very talented young musicians out there right now. It gives me a good feeling. And they have there own different struggles to face. But to have some smug internet douchebag spout off because we have those opinions shows the very problem the internet itself has created.
Rant over.

Oh, this fucking guy is high comedy at his best😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Am I in a band, are you fucking kidding me?
How about I’ve been in bands since 1971, son?

I’ll ignore the rest of your nonsense, because it’s all bullshit. Let some others of your generation tell you to shove it.
