If guitar playing was truly competitive, then it’s only natural to study other’s techniques.
In motor racing you would be noting another’s racing-lines, gear-selections, and braking - in order to get closer to their lap times.
But guitar playing is more like running your mum to the shops. You are a driver. Once you have enough proficiency to safely do that, then any other aspirational thoughts performance-wise must come from an inner force that compels you to do something about your current stasis.
Myself, I longed to take certain bends at 120mph, redline constantly, and have a crowd of attractive women swoon as they watch me do it. Men that wouldn’t even spit on me at school would buy me drinks, and the spontaneous sexual exploits on the winner’s rostrum as I’m waiting for my mum to come out of the hairdressers, would be the stuff of legends.
The internet can be very useful. At least good enough for me to find out that there isn’t a current formula for driving mums down to the shops.
