What can I say, I really needed a portable rig for when I have to fly to gigs and for europe tour dates. Renting has become to expensive and very difficult to secure and schedule believe it or not, and traveling with a full size head is virtually impossible when you fly due to weight and cost $$ This little setup will fit in my carry on overhead luggage!

So after a fair amount of hunting and research I picked up a 2) space skb x rack in shallow depth, a rocktron velocity 300 power amp, and an engl e530 preamp.

Needless to say, holy crap this setup is amazing, i really can't believe the sounds i'm getting out of it. The rocktron power amp has a ton of power and the reactance (resonance bass boost) and presence controls really help dial in the sound and fine tune it. The engl is a really cool preamp , it kind of reminds me of my savage 120 that i had, which i believe is one of the best sounding amps engl makes....

Anyways, just figured id share!

Sometimes, meat and potatoes is all one needs.....

Nice little rig.

thanks, im going to make a clip as soon as i feel a little better....

My Engl E530 clip on tonefinder (previously netmusicians.org) is constantly having me wanting another one of these preamps. It is definitely the dogs bollocks ad my favorite Engl product.

One of the only pieces of gear I really regret selling. I used it with a Peavey Classic 120/120 power amp and it slayed.

nice, link to the clips ? i think engl makes some great sounding amps. I really liked the savage 120 the best, and i really like the e530 to, with a couple small tweaks its a monster preamp and serious bang for the buck.

Sounds really good!

Yours is modded by FJA, right? I really dig the gain tones on yours. I owned a 530, but didn't like the sounds and sold it quickly.

That sounds badass. 8)

Did you like the preamp fairly well before the mods?

I just did a couple swaps on my Rockmaster, and it definitely thickened up the pull-gain and made it sound nice, but I kind of don't want to have to mod a new Engl if I were to order one.

thanks man, yea i did like it a lot stock, just some tweaks to make it more like my Cameron Aldrich modded plexi .... its tighter now in the bottom end, and has a little more grind to it, the eq works more like a marshall to. The good thing is the Engl is pretty close and doesn't need to much work to get it really killer. I like the rockmaster but they don't have the ability to switch between US voltage and European Voltage. The power transformer in the e530 can, and that made it the winner for me as I play in the states and europe....

Thanks for your thoughts and info, and that's cool you tour across the pond with it. 8)

Hi dawnofdreamx97, nice setup!. I love this combination how powerful and pro sounding is. I've got a few questions to you. I own an e530 and velocity 300 too, and i'm planning to acquire a portable rack case.
1) Does the SKB shallow X rack allow you to have all cables plugged (even e530 mains plug)? I thought it was too shallow.
2) I noticed you put the velocity 300 on the bottom, but this way you cancel its upper ventilation (where a fan is installed), had you noticed heat accumulation or it works flawlessly even at very high levels?
3) 110/220 voltage selector: does the e530 still use the internal original transformer or does it get it replaced by FJM? My unit works with 120V but currently i'm playing it on a 220V country, by using a step down converter, it would be way better to use the internal transformer rather than an ungrounded external step down...

best regards,
JJ

Sounds fucking STELLAR!!! Goddamn. Haven't heard anything that sounds good enough to give me GAS in a long, long while, and this is doing it!! DAMN YOU!! haha
