Ditto......always want to crank it when it comes on. Just something about it that is so pure.

Yep one of the best there ever was and ever will be. Thanks for posting.

What do you think of this tone?
Still one of the most unique sounds in rock 'n roll. Nobody sounded like that then or since really. It's those metal cone Altec's with that MXR EQ and Dist. +.

It's like a tone lane everyone admires but no one dare drives in.

Hell Yeah!!! Randy was the shit!!!!

There are some parts which keeps me concerned about Randy's reputation as a perfect "double tracker" or is it on purpose? :scared:

I noticed that too. I'm leaning towards it must be on purpose because a) it's so obvious (so why wouldn't they go back and fix it) and b) there's one part there that's pure genius where a phrase is continued-extended between the two parts (which I had never heard before ... that was totally cool).

i think part of the reason the tracked parts arent super tight is the fact that that album was done very quickly. Ozzy even said there were tons of things Randy wanted to redo and fix (and a lot of parts are from the demos and scratch tracks). so, who knows? if randy wanted to fix things then it may not be intentional...

personally, i think Randy's tone on Diary was amazing. Over the Mountain is still one of my favorite songs/tones ever. a little harsh maybe, but then again i like slightly harsh tone.

I think this isolated track gives an accurate account of what his tone was actually like. I think it sounds more like his live tone on the bootlegs and like his tone on the After Hours TV show. And, I think his tone is fantastic on this track. It sounds better here than on the album itself.

I think this really shows how great he was at layering tracks. There may be some flaws, but that's to be expected when working with a small budget.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't think his tone was that great. I played the crap out of these releases, despite what is less than great tone imo.

You won't get flamed for that. The general internet consensus is that Randy Rhoads had horrible tone. There have been 9,000,000 threads about it on every forum. It seems to be mainly Monday morning quarterbacking by people who weren't really even into music at the time or kids who think amps have always had as much low end as modern amps.

At that time, I thought Rhoads live tone was incredible. It was when I saw him. I had two bootleg live tapes from way before Tribute came out and Randy's tone on them was great. Personally, I think Max Norman should be shot for taking a tone like what you hear on the After Hours show live and making it sound like the first album and to a much lesser extent Diary did.

That is totally badass. It's not even the guitar playing so much as the space in between and the room ambience that gives you this new feel of how he worked.

I love these isolated tracks, like someone above said they give me a whole new take on songs I've heard a 1000098654 times.

Great song. His tone on this iso track is very cool. Salty sounding. i never dug the doubling the solos thing. Too bad the production
on these albums weren't better. Classic albums for sure but hard to listen to for me. I thought the live tribute album sounded so much better
than the studio albums. I wore out the live album.

Yes, I agree. His tone on the The King Biscuit Show (Montreal 7/31/81) was awesome. It is my favorite Randy boot and I played the crap out of it back in the day. Good thing I have a CD version of this show and many others!!
