I'd rather see the backing track posted then everyone records their own take and posts their own mix vs lumping 49 solos that hacked, whacked ans posted together ;)

Steve
Im with ya. The concept of listening to one solo after another is cool but when ya consider all of the hassles , It loses its appeal pretty quickly. A big point is that you dont get more than 20-30 secs to play; Individual performances let you stretch your legs.

Personally, I think that the extended 30 man jam thing is a novelty at best..

@SilentUnderground : It would be WAY cool if you would be up for doing this!

Unless it's B flat minor I'm out.

In my opionion - not that it probably counts for much -
There should be 3 similar backing tracks that should be :
x-style, in x-tempo, and then 3 variations on key/backing riffs -

This way it wont end up being a 17 minute "masterpiece" of the same riff looped.
Cause that would seem a tad obnoxious -

Lets say for shits and giggles (we all choose) - 80's Thrash, 160bpm, E, F#, C
- Think Metallicas ride the Lightning solo section -

Basically of the 3 backing keys/variations provided:

You pick your favorite (1) key/variation
Record your 4/8/16 bar solo
Send it to Silent Underground Studios upload page.
Done !!

(I know some people will want to record a 3 minute virtuoso solo - but as stated above. I dont think we need a 17 minute song as the out come)

I'll mix the thing and setup all the key changes etc might even add a little intro / outro to make it more of a complete song and then I'll re-post the final result in a new thread

(not phased by the backlash if anyones shredding egos get hurt by my mix)
This is my job anyways!? - I have to worry about that shit every day of the week -

But leave it to me to judge if your performance was up-to-par for the track.

That way, if lets say - you may think you're a little better than you are -
you wont get shamed in front of the group and have to defend yourself.

Gotta remember guys, this is supposed to be fun - not a competition - noones is getting a freakin record contract from the "rig-talk united metal sessions project" - John Petrucci aint gonna call you and let you know how good your 15 second solo was lol :D :D :D

If you dont like the "all together idea" dont send in your track - simple.

But most definetly feel free thou to take all 3 parts and mix up your own jam and add it as a response to the final mix thread - (I for one personaly dig colabs, I love jamming with different dudes / gals, so to be part of a shred fest that has 4 or 10 or even 30 people jamming - would be incredible)

If the Style and Key blah blah blah... chosen doesnt suit you, dont send something in.
If this works out, we can do another one - no dramas at all.

Now, proceed to argue -
Lol :D :D :D

I refuse to read RVS' post. My limit is 30 words or less...

What was the topic anyway?

I dont think ego or competition has anything to do with it. Someone posting a backing track and then everyone taking their own individual take on it and posting for others to check out is just better all around IMHO. It doesnt need to be a 3 min virtuoso piece, it can easily be half of that( or longer if one so desires)

I couldnt participate If I wanted to as Im recording challenged but one of these days, my lazy ass is going to get one of those Zoom Q2HD thingys and post clips that way..

It would be a piece of cake for you Kage. Have Ralph help you with the gear purchase, have him over for a few beers and by the time you're done you'll easily have the skills necessary to record a single guitar track over a backing track. Trust me...

I have tried that Bro and the end result is best defined as Crash and Burn...

Then I'm going to blame Ralph. He's trying to bring you down.

YeahI tried blaming Ralphie for that but if Im being honest, when the 2 of us get together, The combined levels of procrastination and Scatterbrainedness become epic and you know how that "best laid plans" thing goes...

I can't believe you would let that hold you back from a jam Kage.

You're already half way there with your Toneport, and I believe you said you had Reaper? You have everything you need.

You dont understand Tom, I have this weird mental block when it comes to the recording process. Ive got degress in some advanced stuff and I cant record.. yeah , its pathetic..

these can be fun but the 70 guy opus is not for me
i wouldnt get down on james for off timed tracks but homie needs to handle rejection a bit better. the taking my ball and going home tantrum is very unrock and roll

conversely if you can't keep time or pitch or say anything musically cool no quantizing is going to fix it

That's okay, Kage. I have 3 degrees and credits toward a second MS and I can't record OR play, so you have me beat!

But leave it to me to judge if your performance was up-to-par for the track.

anyway, I mentioned in my very earlier post to just throw a Jam out... ANYONE...

If some one wants to take thos MP3's, wavs, whatever and stack em end to end so be it...

It's not brain surgery.... Just post your take, your mix... or don't .... :D

Much talk... no BACKY-TRACKY... :gethim: :gethim: :gethim:

I only meant if its REALLY terribly out of time - or fucked up for whatever reason I'd leave it out -
Save having somebody unhappy with the end result or feeling like they were harshly portrayed blah blah blah -

Cause at the end of the day - if you shine a turd - its still a damn turd ;)

I'm reasonably new around these parts, and I have literally ZERO clue what you guys are capable of producing -
Could be fucking great - could be a heap of dog shit....

I don't know (yet) - But I'm interested in finding out.

I only suggested I'd mix it cause it would give me a genuine chance to interact with you dudes -

But either way, I aint gonna cry myself to sleep if you all want to mix it yourselves -

Less hassle for me at the end of the day

Not that any1s asking, but methinks the bigger issue is some don't hav a cheap standard recording mechanism in place, some of u guys hav killer home recording setups, many diffrent setups im sure, but what's a bucks-down guy (like me) to use to quickly yank the track off the site, plug my mic or D.I. into "x", lay down sum notes, and then send it back clean, clear, artifact free? Im sure u get what u pay for, but is there an inexpensive, easy way in?
