Not that any1s asking, but methinks the bigger issue is some don't hav a cheap standard recording mechanism in place, some of u guys hav killer home recording setups, many diffrent setups im sure, but what's a bucks-down guy (like me) to use to quickly yank the track off the site, plug my mic or D.I. into "x", lay down sum notes, and then send it back clean, clear, artifact free? Im sure u get what u pay for, but is there an inexpensive, easy way in?

how much you want spend? I'm sure with a price range recommendations will be thrown out...

Well, that was kinda the point, I'm saying the LEAST expensive, still digital (not quite cd) quality setup that doesn't require an engineering degree 2 use, idk, I've had a number of home pc recording setups in the past and I always felt I spent more time fumbling with the deck than actually playing/ recording.... there shud b a standard by now, no? Fast, quick, cheap? Maybe not.. I'll go crawl back under my rock..... Lmao!

Only saying this cause it wud simplify those of us who'd like 2 participate but don't hav the $ to put towards a dedicated setup.. Unless we're All going with phone videos as was mentioned...

Visit a Guitar Center. There is a base unit by preSonus. 99 or 129, can't remember. They teach a class on recording every Saturday at 10. The software has a cheap upgrade. I have been messing with it and it is pretty easy. I am over 50 and don't like fooling with gear. I hate it. This is actually kinda easy. It is harder to set up this Nova System I just got than that thing.

So I take my son tonight to his first movie 'Finding Nemo' in 3D, I'm watching the movie and I start freaking out about what I wrote last night on this thread. It all kind of hit me. I just want to oplogize for what I wrote. I was wrong and it's not really how I feel it's just a lot of old shit got stirred up in me. Anyway I just want to say I am sorry and I was wrong.

How do we know this won't happen again. I'm just a little worried that you might hurt us again.

I guess there's no garauntee but I am sorry for what I said. I have done a lot of good around here and always opened my talents and studio for the cause. Anyway I am sorry.

For a few years it seemed non-stop... Then I got divorced.

H! Hope all is well man

For recording on the cheap, the best thing you could do is get a simple USB interface like a Presonus Audiobox or similar. Should be around $150 or so if buying one new.
Then download Reaper recording software, you can use it for free for a while and then buy it later if you like it. Has plenty of built in Delay/Reverb/Chorus effects plugins to use too, which is nice.

Once you have that stuff, all you need is a mic and a cable. Reaper is dead simple to use and there's loads of tutorials on YouTube to show you how to do basic recordings, step by step. Takes minutes for me to setup my recording rig and once you've done it a few times you'll get the hang of it real quick

Me too, you'd think by now I'd have this thing called life down to a science but I don't. Live and learn, don't want to ever put my hands in any of those fires again.

For an inexpesive recording solution, I think the Line6 UX1 is a fantastic value, it comes with pod Farm 2 and sounds quite decent, and very convenient. Also got a mic input for when you want to mic your amp.

I dont think there was anything wrong with what you wrote James....you put a TON of effort into that jam and to have someone call you out and question what you did...well that is just plain wrong. Someone puts 15 minutes into recording a clip (wrong for that matter...), and then you do everything within your power to get it into the final product so that at least the guy is heard vice just getting dropped, along with the crazy number of hours you spent to put it all together in the first place...only to now be blasted for it....yeah I would have written some crazy shit up on the forum also...LOLOL THe dude could have easily just posted his opinion on how to do it and left your name out of it....and all would have been just fine...but to be called out...that I call BS on...20 other dudes clips were just fine on your jam and the one guy who submitted his without following your directions at all comes back to say you didnt do his clip justice....ummm...what should he reasonably have expected?? You should have jsut left his clip out of it and been done with it...

For 98% of us here on the forum, this is just simply a hobby, our reputations mean absolutely NOTHING on here as far as our employment and being able to support our families...whereas you are in the 2% that your reputation means EVERYTHING as far as future employment goes and quite literally ANYTHING negative or sub standard actually affects your income and your ability to support yourself and your family. Yeah, I would by hyper sensitive also....if I was in your shoes....

Unfortunately, until they come out with the "Musical Talent" pedal, I will just be on the sidelines...

I'm not a music industry pro so perhaps my perception is out of whack, but is it really possible for a bunch of weekend warrior hacks to damage the reputation of an industry pro? I'm not understanding how that's possible, even if the potential customers used this site, because we're just ignorant amateurs, right?

My goal isn't to keep this thing going because James already apologized for what he said, but I simply don't understand how this forum could affect the reputation of an MI pro.

I work with PTLE8 and my buddy on Sonar.
We noticed that the tracks never lined up; we kept going back and forth confirming the 130 bpm but still had issues. It didn't line up at 129, 130, or 131 (?) Then he notices Sonar has an option that must be clicked in order fto line the tracks up. I don't know about PTHD or other PTs, but PT has this wacky non-sharing crap built into their wavs. Could this have caused the issue James reported? IDK, but worth noting if you're doing group jams across platforms.

To clarify, when I mentioned iphone video, it was not meant to be the audio submission. I meant that one would record with a DAW and an iphone- the iphone video kept and the audio coming from the DAW. Most people do this live, but since my chops suck I usually have 30+ takes to get my solo bearable. I then go in and 'perform' my video to the track wearing my iphones- this allows me to go into cool environmental settings. The video take usually is only 1 or 2 passes to get it right.

Cheap recording to DAW? Grab a 57. Do a search and you'll find many choices under $200 for the interface. Which one depends on your CPU and DAW choice, as compatibility can be a problem. CPU specs and proper setup to defeat many useless taxing features is crucial. The fear of spending money and having issues scared the hell out of me, so I bought a seperate CPU just for my DAW and Video editing (Rain CPU- very impressive). I went with an 11R for my interface and love the multiple options/applications it can do. I'm sure there's cheaper routes but there's my choices.

As for the people who ask for a whole song to jam over, then everyone else do the same...well, we really don't need anyone to create something for that; there's plenty of backing tracks available. I'm not sure how long the attention span would be if 10+ people jammed on the same 4 minute track. If you need 4 minutes to stretch your legs, why not write your own song?
I love the idea of attempting group jams comprising shorter 4/6/16 bar solos. It risks the "Stars" catastrophe, but can also yield fantastic results. I love the way my previous jams turned out. I look forward to Silent Underground's project

+1

My recording setup is simply an M-Audio Mobile Pre USB ($100) and a Shure 57 or a Sennheiser e609. I use nTrack as my DAW ($55) and that's it. I feel like I get pretty decent results and I know next to nothing about recording, producing, engineering. I just move the mic position around until I like what I hear and hit record.

Dude - you are WAY out of line here. No one blasted anyone. Rupe simply pointed out that his take was not lined up properly and it lost the vibe. He admitted that he sent the wrong file type and said he didn't mean to attack James.

For what it's worth, I've never seen one of these 20+ person jam compilations go off without someone not liking the result. Weekend warriors or not, we are musicians and generally have very specific feelings about what we want to hear. That is why just putting up a backing track and letting everyone take a crack is the best approach - each of us maintains control of the final product.

Finally, as Bob said. I can't imagine someone seriously considering a recording project not going with James because of something said by someone on rig-talk. If that were true, you probably wouldn't want them as a client anyway.

Wait....so its ok for someone to say"yeah, the last time I submitted something for a forum jam, James screwed it all up" and you think that doesn't hurt his reputation?? Where exactly do you think budding musicians hang out at?? If I was spending my hard earned cash on getting something produced, and I heard something online that was a bit lackluster...you bet your ass it would affect my decision...

All I was saying was it was messed up for James to be named....and that I understand his reply...thats all....sorry..dont think I was out of line at all for defending James comment....
