just old by design - tubes have been around the block a while - alot longer than i have

The millions dollar question.

Most companies choose a 'voice' for amps. There is a Mesa voicing in Recto's that is identifiable, Roadsters even more so.

Will you be able to have a differently voiced amp from channel to channel? That is where the POD/Axe seem to have a leg up on versatility albeit there are sacrifices in the percieved quality of the particular voice replication.

I like the old SLO crunch voice and interactive feel when playing, also the Rivera KT has a dark compressed riffing voice. Can those two elements be combined at what is considered a high quality level in one head? I can get a decent clean but not a great clean in most high gain heads. Also, I have not tried all high gain heads.... Still have not found a Sig X to plug in. Maybe there is just no market for that amp? I played a Diezel Schmidt and it was pretty close. My Rivera KT is pretty close. Even if there was one, it is still good to have a few amps anyway...

Interesting thread. On the social graces aspect. Interesting comments. I will have to abstain on that one as I don't think our relationship will get to the place where it matters...

Peace...

For your amp: I suggest you "borrow" or "evlove" from the tight/loose bass cap switch- that is a great idea! While you're at it, slap a mid boost switch on each channel, one that also lowers the hi a bit

Mostly everything is way over my head here, just chipping in my favorite options

glpg80, are you not supposed to be in the military by now, fighting the war in Afghanistan? For real dude, you need to learn some tact.

If he learns tact, that's less time he spends in his amp laboratory creating tone! I like my amp guru to have some anti-social kooki-ness

  Hell, guess he might as well invest in aviator glasses and hoodie stocks while he is at it.

Agreed. Killer thread - it has (almost) everything I look for in the internet:
Arguments, comedy, info, and amps. All we need is some boobies, and I've got my one-stop-shop.

i have been in processing since march of this year - i am only temporarily on the forum until i get the final word in processing - the big yes or no you could say. thank you for asking

learn some tact? most in the military do not have this tact you speak of - you are told like it is. they do not buttercup anything. you have expectations that are set which you will not meet but will exceed on and off base. you have no other choice, and you will do it with tact if they tell you to do it with tact. i know military life - half of my family is enlisted. i have been on base before. a whole different world of expectations and guidelines.

however, your point of view makes it out that my time here is wasted and i should be out trying to get killed for my country and doing so to meet expectations you seem to judge through a forum.

let me tell you something bro, i have just as much right to be here on this forum as anyone else. i respect those on the front lines and those already on base. they do it because it needs to be done and they are told to do so and they are willing to have their freedom stripped of them. if you have served our country then i thank you for your service. however if you have not made those sacrifices and you feel so empowered to tell someone else off who is in the process, why are you not wearing an ACU yourself?

i would drop it all to fight for my country right now if i could. :salute:

so do not preach to me "tact" when it seems you have alot to learn yourself.

gipg80 youll probably want to change your screen name after this if you want to sell any amps here...I think you rubbed a few people the wrong way and without provocation, that just how I see it, you clearly know what you are talking about but the way you say it is the problem.

admitting you do not know much of anything is the first step to learning.

you are new. everyone has been there once before on this forum, but you will not make friends easily calling people blow-holes.

i am not planning on making 'friends' here. friends are the people i play music with IRL. i hope to talk a little business about amps (of which i know very little) and effects and soak in a little knowledge.

you could be the nicest guy in the world, i wouldn't know, it is just you give this vibe like you wanna nitpick details in undefined arguments just to show that you know alot. surely that doesn't mean you are blow-hard or a blow-hole, just means you are acting like one.

glpg80":2l33p1ej said:
also, let me get this straight. i am the douche because im teaching someone willingly, who refuses to learn and accept the fact the circuit he paid $2,000+ for is being ripped apart in this topic left and right while also being compared to circuits half its price.

i wouldn't say you're a 'douche' for doing that, i would say that it is nice to have someone who knows that much about the circuit sharing their knowledge. but really, i couldn't tell what all the heated discussion was about in the first place. something about how some people didn't think the SLO design was original enough, then others claiming absolute originality and saying a bunch of technical jargon to back up either side. then something about how the recto sounds like it... what are you guys talking about?

glpg80":2l33p1ej said:
my social skills? you are right. i have none. or do i? whats my name again? what town do i live in? where do i know you from? before you judge someone else - think about where you are for a second, and make sure your hands are clean before you do any finger pointing.

that was my oversight to claim you have none. you may be really courteous IRL, but i wouldn't know as this is the only thread i have seen you on. really didn't mean to attack you personally so much outright. but i just wandered across this thread and saw this incredibly knowledgeable person acting with quite a disappointing attitude and felt the need to chime in. i will admit, i don't know you at all, but it was not a good first impression.

:D

I too have a degree from an accredited four year university.

i dont know you at all. and calling me a blowhole and then claiming i have no social skills on top of it does not give me a good first impression, you are the one with 4 posts here and a join date of 1 day. you seem like someone who has an authority issue pointing others out like they are the next coming of god himself.

i have plenty of people i consider friends on this forum, and one or two others i care not for. it will happen. in a perfect world i would not want to dislike anyone but i cannot help this fact. so claiming i have no social skills would mean i would not know this at all.

you did not mean to attack me personally so much outright? funny. because that is exactly what you have done. otherwise i would not be posting this exact message on this exact forum now would i?

thank you for the comments for the knowledge, but the insults you have given do more damage. next time how about learning to keep your opinions about people personally to yourself. the entire time i have posted here dealt with the topic of rectifiers and the SLO. next thing you know people are calling me a jackass and insulting my plans for military.

bygons be bygons - welcome to the forum.

the cobra has the same gain circuit as the SLO and recto, but that's where the similarities end
gain pot values are different, power amp is different, clean channel is different (Fender Bassman based, but not the same Bassman version that Marshall copied in the JTM45), huge cranked fixed depth in the power amp (the deep control is not the same as a depth control)
the EQ is completely different from a SLO/Recto or Marshall tonestack, and it doesn't affect only how the pots respond or the overall frequencies distribution
if you wire a regular Marshall tonestack in one of the drive channels, it WILL sound close to a Recto (specially if you scoop the mids and dial in a lot of presence), and somewhat close to a Soldano, but still different (already tried that)
but with the stock tonestack, which is completely different, it's A LOT tighter, clearer, but not as smooth as with the Marshall style EQ
there's also a big volume difference (Marshall EQ is at least 30% louder)

and thanks for the comments. this is a decision i am making for myself. i do not have parents to bitch to or persuade, i do not have a wife, child, girlfriend, etc, i have nothing to loose and everything to gain.

i will probably enlist within the next 6 weeks for sure. still researching at this moment what job i would like to have, but i am pretty much sold on carrying my ass with an M4 and supporting my country in the next steps of war - afghanistan.

Who are you trying to fool? Yourself? Knowing how to say things, rather than what to say, will get you further in life than pretty much anything else one person can do. The world is made up of humans, that have perspective and emotions, and knowing how to walk that perfect line will yield great success. Sure, boot camp in the military may not have much use for it, but as soon as that is done, you revert back to a sense of normalcy, to a degree. Unless you plan on staying in the military till you die, you will be kicked back out in the real world, where interacting with people is a common occurrence.

however, your point of view makes it out that my time here is wasted and i should be out trying to get killed for my country and doing so to meet expectations you seem to judge through a forum.

And you deduced that from the two sentences I posted earlier? Right. Nice way to jump to conclusions. I addressed you with a honest question about you joining the military, then proceed to give you a tip, to help slow the boil in this thread.

let me tell you something bro, i have just as much right to be here on this forum as anyone else. i respect those on the front lines and those already on base. they do it because it needs to be done and they are told to do so and they are willing to have their freedom stripped of them. if you have served our country then i thank you for your service. however if you have not made those sacrifices and you feel so empowered to tell someone else off who is in the process, why are you not wearing an ACU yourself?

Again, I like how you came to rest on all those ideas, after I posted a simple question, and then gave you some advice. Seems to me like you are the one eager to jump to conclusions, otherwise, how else would we have ended up with something like a 20:1 sentence ratio?

And yes, I do serve my country. Currently doing so now. I work hand in hand with the Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Energy every single day, at all hours of the day. Other than that, I can't tell you much more about it.

dude you remind me of a lawyer. anything you say can and will be used against you in the topic of SLO

you mentioned 20:1 sentence ratio.

take a look real quick man, i think you have me beat

how about worrying about yourself for once and take a break from the computer. i dont owe you or anyone on this forum an explanation that pertains to my personal life.

the truth is that most people on this forum dont care!

at least i attempted to stay on topic from the get go!

once again, i make 'friends' with real life people who play music. i scan these forums occasionally and never wanted to comment, until i saw your posts. your horrendous attitude is why i joined to begin with. i took the time out of the day to register to this to make those comments against you, just cuz i thought you were being that bad.

i am not trying to impress people with my vast knowledge.

i am not even trying to win an argument.

i just thought you have been acting horribly and felt like saying something about it. cuz frankly, if i knew as much as you i def wouldn't wield the power like you do.

i don't think will i really be actively participating in these forums, as it seems people are more interested in verbally sparring than in progressing their knowledge. i would enjoy something a little more constructive.
