So I was trying to record something with my Smallbox before I do the negative feedback mod, trying to keep the controls around the 11:00 range except for bass which I had at 1:00, but it seems like it's really hard to record a bright amp. How do you record with bright amps? Do you guys run the bass and mids all up or something? Why does it sound smoother in person but kind of gritty in a recording?

It's off-center or else it would be really bright. Sennheiser E609. It's angled a bit towards the outer, but just slightly. I experimented with mic positioning prior to the recording. The speaker is a 75w Weber Silver Bell, so it has ample low end and not too bright.

When I read your thread title I was like there's a Smallbox Mini? Hell yeah! Then I was all like, oh, mini demo. I'm sad now

You could try adjusting the presences knob. I didn't really care for the e609. Try a 57 or. . .
I'd check out some ribbon mics. Cascade Fathead or Fathead II. Good starter ribbon mic without breaking the bank. It will def attenuate the highs, it's a smooth and darker mic.

I had the presence and treble both set at 11:00

The rhythm part sounds right to me. Definitely not overly bright.

OK updated with new recording. Nothing changed, not even mic positioning, just did the negative feedback mod.

I don´t think Smallbox is a bright amp. Not at all! And I like my tone a lot brighter than what I heard in your clips. I usually set the presence knob around 6,5 or 7 and the gain on 7 or 8 with a R9 Les Paul. And keep in mind that it is a bright Les Paul.
But everyone has his own tone references and it is a never ending quest. Good luck on yours.
