Don't have much to say other than, I'm enjoying reading this thread and "watching" the whole process! :)
Cool! I hope to have the layouts to post soon!

Outstanding!!!

But how many calories is this new red swirl board compared to the old one? ;) :D
This board is much sweeter - high in calories...

2 things:
1. I love when this thread pops up to the top. Great idea/job/project!!!

2. Steve is a far more patient and deliberate man than I am. The frustration of trying to lay things out only to find out I didn't have enough space would have resulted in a string of expletives before I thought about how to "fix" the problem... In fact, I may have actually had a few things soldered in place before I realized my mistake/dilemma...

Believe me, I do too. It is cool to have something to report/show...

Right now that Hiwatt style board is sitting on my desk half filled with components that have not been soldered... Honestly, I should have realized I didn't have enough space just by counting up components on the schematics, but I got a little ahead of myself. I might be able to figure out some messy way of doing this, but the bottom line is I want an elegant, clean, easy to understand board layout and the only way to achieve all that is to go custom. I want this board to be easy to mod and repair as necessary and with a convoluted layout - forget it. What I'm doing now is a bit painful and time-consuming and takes me away from actual soldering, but in the end, this will be a better amp in a variety of ways. Plus some really cool pro amp builders have volunteered to look over my layout and give me feedback on wiring layouts etc. so I can minimize noise... Cool!

Steve - awesome job! Only suggestion I have is to rename the PPIMV on the back... I get it, I'm sure most guys who build/mod amps get it, but joe the amp consumer probably wouldn't. Give it a cool name but include 'master volume' or somesuch in there. Most people who are going to buy an amp don't know what the heck a Post Phase Inverter Master Volume means anyways :)

Nice that you're going to do a layout on paper before commiting the amp to it - as my dad always said, measure twice cut once! Some of the Gerald Weber books have some great info on doing layout for low noise and stability... some of his info is dumbed down to a great degree but there are some good ideas buried in there too.

Yo Steve - I am stunned, scared, and inspired all at the same time regarding your build !

Hey, don't we have a friend, Carl E. in common ?

I think you were the one who turned me on to modding my mojave because of his work on yours

If so, has he had an eye on this project?

I believe that is the exact reaction I was going for!

Yes we do! I did turn you on to Carl...

Simple answer is no, he hasn't... Longer answer follows:

Before I lost my mind here, I had talked to Carl about him doing a one off amp based on a Jose Arredondo schematic I had (it is all over the Internet really...) using a Ceriatone kit as a start. We went back and forth on it and he had an idea that would have gotten that one tone. I started imagining and decided I really wanted several different footswitchable modes, based off a Super Lead base and realized that it was gonna be a huge, expensive project. At that point, I came up with the idea of trying to actually make a boutique side business out of this, the "open source" concept, etc. and decided to take it on myself. I did all the design and work to get where I am currently without any input from Carl as I'm sure he'd tell you... I have had a lot of help from Olaf over here and some input from Bruce Egnater as well in the early stages...

Thanks and excellent input on the PPIMV. I will definitely change the name for the production units...

I think this is really the only way to get this right and will also be a valuable contribution to the open source element. It is a lot easier to wire up an amp to a detailed layout than a schematic, even if the board is already drilled and turrets installed. Good heads up on the Weber books as well...

Hey guys!

I had some things going on over the last couple months (ran a marathon and heavy day job commitments) that limited my available time to work on this project, but I'm back on track now and working on my layout. I should have new progress posts in the next couple of weeks... I expect a tweaked prototype done by late fall...

haha, no, I've seen your house - I think your doing everything right! Can't wait to hear that beast when it's done!

I've got 3/4 of the layout done now! I used CAD to create a scale drawing of the amp and board (with no components on it) and just drew the components on the board and wires to the off board components freehand. I'm going to convert this hand drawn board component layout to more precise CAD this weekend and finish the layout and then post an update with the layout drawing...

Sweet - out of curiosity are you incorporating any of the Caswell mods ? (#39 in particular?)

Nope. Here is some progress on my layout though:

awesome, looks like it's coming along nicely!

Thanks man!

I'm workin' on it. I can't wait to get back to drilling the board and staking it and soldering, but being able to visualize the finished layout at scale is immensely helpful so this effort is worth it in my mind...
