Fryette Power Amp owners or rack power experts. Help with rack, heat, etc question.🤘

So i have a Fryette PS-2A incoming. I was planning on throwing it in a 4-space rack with a Syn-2 and Furman power unit.

Now I have been thinking about the heat element of this setup, especially with the Fryette PS-2A. What is the best way to navigate this? I've heard get more rack space between components, put power amp on top, bottom, etc. What would be thr best strategy for this?

Yes, and it’s still hot

The PS2A has vents to the top and back. I would not cover those. The easiest solution would be to leave a half or full rack space above it since it appears to be shallow enough that even a shallow preamp would cover the top vents.

Just being in the top of the rack is not a solution unless there's space above the top.

I am currently looking for a 6U shallow rack for this exact reason. Running the PS-2 and a SYN-2 with a Juice Goose in a 4U 19" deep rack now and I want more ventilation. It's also a PITA to get in the back of the 19" rack to move cables around.

Why do you want a shallow rack? I thought a bigger one would be better. Does the heat get trapped in there?

The Peavey 50/50 power amp would be ok in a 4U.
But Rackman is right. You want one clear rack space above a top-vented power amp.
I actually like one bare screw hole between every rack. Very snazzy.
Can’t beat a big fan blowing in the back as well.

I thought of putting mine in a rack til I used it. Thing got hot as shit, so i always kept it up top where it could breathe. I believe it was a ps100

It has a fan in it. You are not using the load part of it so it should not get very hot anyway. Running my 69 Marshall 100 watt thru it, different story.

I never used mine as an attenuator. I used mine as a power amp to make my 50 watt amp a 100 watt amp Thing got hot all the time and the fan was constantly running.

That uses the inbuilt load, unless you were doing something like taking the FX send of your amp and plugging it into the FX return of the power station. The power station is a reamper, it always first knocks your amp down to line level using the load, and then reamplifies to your desired volume. Even if you're using it to make things louder.

I'll be taking the Synergy Syn-2 and running it i to the Line In and then into a cab. I'll have the XLR out going to a P.A. mist likely. We'll have to see how this goes.

What temperature do you consider too hot? Many tube amps have the tubes under the chassis with no issues.

when i was using my stereo power amps live i kept them in separated in their own rack case for weight/cartage and left space above for ventilation.

i still keep spaces between units in my current rack. it makes a big difference regarding heat coupling when everything is wedged together or spaced apart,
and the last thing your precious vintage or modern rack units need is unnecessary exposure to heat.

The way my amp shelf is set up makes it a PITA to behind it move cables. The deeper 19" rack I am using now means that the cables are almost halfway deep inside. Even turning the rack sideways means that I can't see inside easily to make any cable switches.

If the unit is on, the fan will run. Spunds like you would have been running your amp to the amp in jack? If so, You would have been using the load part of it running the amp into it. Using a modeler or preamp into the power amp of it won’t get that hot.

I’ve got 4 SYN2 units and a KSR 100W power amp and a 1U power conditioner in an 8U rack built into my studio desk. I have 1 space between the synergy and power amp. The SYN2 units get hot, really hot to the touch. Like do hot I can’t touch them. The KSR seems fine but it has plenty of space since there is nothing on the top side of it.

I bought a standalone slanted rack and planning to move the whole setup to it so I can have 1 space between each piece of gear.
