Fryette Resale Value

I was wondering why Fryette's have such poor resale value? My UL is one of the very best high gainers I've played and they seem to be very well respected on forums and by people I've met in person. I never really hear anything negative about them, yet I've seen UL's sell for 1500. Anyone know why?

Interesting question. The demand for these amps must be lower than other amps. I've owned an UL and a Deliverance. They are very good amps, just not the best IMO. Their core tone just lacks a smidgen of character IMO.

I think this totally sums it up. Fryette suffered when they lost the VHT name. That's a fact.

I disagree about the lack of character a bit. I think my D120 sounded very different from the Mesa's/Marshall flavors I have owned. Of course tone is subjective. VHT's were really an amp that never over saturated the market. They are pricey, not in many retail outlets and are not an amp any known guitars players are known for using on a grand scale. People that know, know. It's a shame really because I think their builds and tone are top notch. I have owned 2 and only sold them as I needed funds when my wife and I were in a bad place and separated.

Outside of my Quick Rod, there is no other amp I gas for than a D120 with effects loop.

Agreed. I think a lot of people don't know about them with the name change but that's a guess. They can be finicky with using the right settings or even tubes.

I think their character is some of the best and very unique. I have had issues with other guitarists amps in a band mix. Sometimes in order for the VHT to cut and be heard it cranked and drowning out the other guitar but if I turn down to match the other guitars volume it gets lost. That's my only issue I've ever had with a VHT amp and that isn't really a bad thing. It allows you to tell your other guitarist that you think it's time to upgrade to a VHT haha.
Can run a boost in front for that extra edge I guess if there's anything missing Imo it is that.

It's just one of those amps that has been around, and to a certain extent, been around the block with most experienced players. The other thing, the UL has been produced now for what, 20 years so far? Meaning there's a lot of them out there by now and there is no shortage of them for sale on the used market.

Like someone else said, there just isn't anyone famous using VHT really at the moment and they are not the hot item so there isn't a high demand there right now.

Outside of all that, A guy is getting one heck of an amp for $1400-1600. The build quality is awesome, the layout, reliability, etc. Not to mention it's easy to send it back to the factory for repair/service since it's a domestic builder.

I love my UL/fatbottom, and will not be selling that combo in the foreseeable future for any reason.

I would agree with this. Although I think it may be offset from the circumstances surrounding him losing the rights to the name. From what I remember reading on one of these forums, if he 'hypothetically' defaulted on his loan from that Chinese company/bank, he had to relinquish the rights to the name VHT. So . . . skip payments on a free loan and all you have to do is change your name? Sure, I might even do that. But then again I don't know the facts and I might be just spreading wrong info here.

Honestly, for 700-1K used you just can't get a better sounding amp than a D60/120. Really versatile tone range, the only gripe would be lack of FX loop(which you can get one put in) and channel switching ability. But that would take away from the tone right? I don't use FX anymore so a loop isn't a big deal. The clarity of the Deliverance is right up there with an SLO. I won't say it sounds the same but it's very close. Great amp.

The resale value is about the same as any other amp.... About half. Like everything else the market is what determines what things sell at..

The name change was most free advertising any amp company has ever had. The Sig X is the best selling amp they ever built and the name change was about 8 months after the release of the Sig X.

None of this stuff is really a mystery ?

Not so sure it is that much out of whack really. Go look for new Bogner 101B or any other higher end amp prices and look at what they sell for used.

I don't think the name changes has a lot to do with it either. Sure there may be some confusion of the uninformed but anyone who is in the loop knows the new VHT stuff isn't really VHT and the Fryette really is VHT ;)

I have a VHT 50 CL w/EQ + Reverb I bought way back before the name change I think I paid $900 for it used off eBay in 2004
