Looking for a fuzz pedal to try out.
I'll be playing it though an amp where my main sounds is plexi distortion.

Just looking for some suggestions on what to try.

Thanks!

Good post, also interested in a nice juicy fuzz.. recommendations that don't break the bank?

There are a few major categories of fuzz pedals and they all sound rather different. Might as well check out what was used by your favourite fuzz-using bands.

Hendrix comes first to mind.. that's heavy fuzz though. I like the sound of a fuzz that is subtle and rounder vs harsh. Fuzz faces seem to be the go to but can that hard edge be diale dout?

berkos 3rd stone --> Xact tone Iridium or Jan Ray ---> clean platform or slightly dirty. Mayer Voodoo 1 Overdrive is another good one.

boost and/or compressor can go between them

problem with most fuzz faces are the are mass produced with shit transistors...

Sunface if you are willing to shell out $200+? Talk to Analogman and see which variation fits you the best.

I was really looking just to try one out.
I'd say mainly for a lead tone that's different for a solo here and there.

My main concern is playing it into an already distorted amp; will it just turn to much? or will it sing?

I have been interested in the analogman for years.. maybe it is time to pull the trigger! agreed that some of the transistors sound like total shit in a lot of the budget fuzz price range.

For me it's a toss up between the Blackout Effectors Musket (or Blunderbuss) and Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh (regular or supreme).

I do this quite a bit. Best fuzz I have found is the Function F/X Clusterfuzz.
Here is a video I made:

Man that thing is versatile. Pretty cool Rez.

I use a Fulltone 70's fuzz and I love that thing. If you use it into a moderately distorted amp it sounds wonderful. I wouldn't use it with one of my modded Marshalls or what have you. I don't think that would work or sound good.

Check Out the videos of Sam vilo, best fuzzsounds on the internet!

You will find really taste fuzz-into-plexi-tones.

And I prefer single coils to humbuckers when using fuzzpedals.

I really like the twosome series from Blackout effectors. Also the Hoof Reaper and Cloven Hoof reaper from EQD. I have a very special twosome on my board which has been there for a couple years now. Great classic hybrid muff style on one side and the nastiest raspy spitting broken amp blues tones on the other. I love it. Its great with my XTCs on the clean channel or blue channel plexi mode. The best is running one clean amp and one in plexi with the fuzz on, glorious sounds to be had....

Thats how EJ does it! They tend to work better into a slightly broken up amp vs a clean amp. Through the clean channel they can bit a little harsh, although a cool tone for something different at times as well..

This is the Black Arts Coven into my Splawn. For muff based fuzzes I love some OD on the amp. I use a SLIGHTLY broken up sound for FuzzFace types

I just picked up a silicon OxFuzz. Build wise it's on par with the AM stuff, really high quality here. I used it exactly how you're describing and it sounds great. I noticed it can be a bit dark/muffled depending on the amp. Fuzz face into plexi is tried and true though. You won't have any issues.

The fulltone OctaFuzz's regular fuzz mode (non-octave setting) is great feeding into an overdrive pedal or overdriven amp as well. Stays bright and cutting but still musical. I had the Dunlop germanium mini briefly and it just wouldn't work in my rig. Way too soft and dark. I bet it would sound good into an AC30 or similar.
