G12k-100 vs red back

I think the K100 has one of the most definite sounds of a speaker. It is very identifiable. The sound kicks serious ass. But it is so unique that it gets old fast. I listen to clips of when i had them. And they are badass. But I don't think it can be your only cab. Gotta have something more vintage or round to switch to.
Yes I don't know what to do with my K100.
Its in my one 212 can with a V30 and I'm thinking of either swapping the K100 out for a C90 or swapping out the V30 for a CL80 or C90.
I had two K100s but I'm down to one.

I find them tight and punchy, but also throaty. I didn't want two of them in a cab so I swapped and sold one and used one of my V30s.

I think if you swap the V30 with a CL80, you're probably closer to the K100 sound than not...that may be a good thing, depending on your taste.
Personally I found that the aggressiveness of the V30's high-mids complements the more subdued character of the K100 (or in my case a vintage K85) better.
I've had an Egnater Elite 80 for a while too, a bit more modern and bassy compared to a CL80.
The two cabs I get the most mileage from are both without a K85 though;
1) Mesa Vertical 2x12, with a G12-65 on top and a Mesa V30 on bottom + beam blocker. This is my gigging cab, if I'm not schlepping my Engl Pro 4x12 (2x V30, 2x K85), because...y'know... 130lbs or so. :cautious:
2) a Marshall 1966B (24" x 24", diagonal 2x12) with another Mesa V30 and an '86 (non-vented) T75. My main cab at home.

Like with the G12-65, my experience is that the K85s (and most likely the K100's likewise) come alive with some serious juice. At lower volumes, they can be too smooth, although the G12-65 definitely seems to suffer from this more than the K85.

I know blues and rock guys who swear by the K100. :)

 Okay.... This thread needs to die or I need to stop following it.

I have 2 Elite 100's (rebadged K100) that are paired with 2 WGS Retro 30's, currently in a 412, but I'll be moving them into 2-212's soon. Following this is really tempting me to swap the Retro 30's for Redbacks to pair with the K100's. This along with buying a new quad for that 412 I mentioned; like I need to be spending more money on speakers.

Seriously though, I'm really considering doing it. For those who have done the K100/redback mix. How have you liked that pairing after spending some time with it?

Oh my yes! Sound huge, throaty, full, balanced, punchy, focused, etc. Really like it. I was going to do something else in my one 212 like CL80/V30 or K100/CL80, but I am a Redbacks freak. Love those. I have them as my base speaker.
And then mix with others in cabs to vary the flavor.

I wish I could find some used Elite 80s.
I had those in an Egnater 212.

That said, Redbacks are my speaker. Love them.

I am sure I'd still prefer over the Elites.

I had CL80/V30 and switched to Redback/V30 and love it.

Having access to two Pulsonic cone, pre-Rola G12H30 55Hz Greenbacks, the K100 wouldn't be *my* first choice for that.
Hey personal preference man.
Gary Moore used to swear by those and T75s.
I've had lots of Greenbacks growing up but not my thing.

For sure.
For certain amps, the combined 'sag' or break-up that low(er) wattage speakers like Greenbacks impart, combined with a certain rolled off top-end, it's the best combination. Take my EVH 5150III 50W, 6L6. That amp can be bright AF and has a bit of a stiff modern tone. Pairing it with a darker speaker that imparts some of that coveted 'woody' character more does wonders.
But my Engl Ironball is more on the darker, middy side, so it benefits more from a speaker like a V30.

It's probably the same reason why early JCM800 cabs that came with G12-65's work so well with the brighter Marshall circuits.

I didn't know that about Gary Moore. I have a pair of '86 T75's that sound awesome too and pair well. But those speakers have very little in common with the later T75's, when they became all scooped, harsh, flubby. Had one of those for a while and luckily got rid of it in the late 90's.

Speeddemon...
I totally agree man.

I want at least one 212 and one 412 with some lower wattage saggy speakers with some break up.
Any suggestions?
I use to have Greenbacks and Lynchbacks in my splawn 412 but switched to Lynchbacks and CL80s.

By the way, I like sag and break up.
I think lighter magnet speakers have more sag, are more forgiving and laid back. But I like the big deep lows and punch of heavy magnets.
The Redbacks is unique in that it has some low wattage speaker characteristics.

Greenbacks can be sort of raspy however....
...but, I'm open to suggestions! :)

In my one 412 I have V30/Redbacks and in my Bogner 412 I think I'm gonna do Creamback M65/CL80.

212 cabs are Redbacks
Redback/K100 (I may try CL80)
Redback/V30

To me Redbacks have some of that greenback feel.

I'm surprised you dark middy amp pairs with a V30 well, which has big mids.

Yes, I had a chance to but two very old T75s and maybe I should have bought.

I'm such a Redbacks fan. I could easily use them in every cab, mayb with a mix here and there.

I'm noticing the Redbacks can't get quite as tight as the more modern or high gain speakers like a V30, K100 or CL80, I guess since the Redback has greenback/creamback roots. It's best mixed if you need a tighter tone.

So I've been doing a lot of swapping around.

First off, nothing compares to a 412 and that sucks because I hate compromises like this.
My 212 cabs always sound thinner and lack the fat smooth nature of my 412s. Notes are harder and not as creamy like a 412, when soloing.

That said, the Redback/K100 is great for rhythm but the low end is hard to control. Tons of lows.

Redback/CL80 is more controls and sounds big.

I am thinking of buying a Mesa C-90 from a guy to try with a Redbacks but thinking it may be too similar to a RB.

Two Redbacks is good in a 212 but seemed congested, so I tried a Redback/V30 and that is good! Leads are fatter and smoother, lows are right. Still not as good as my 412s! :(

Also want to try C-90/CL80

Old thread but I just had to say that the Redback/K100 is a really good blend in a large 212 such as a diagonal oversized 212. May end up trying a DV77 with the Red.

I like the redback in this video. SKIP TO 16:24 for comparisons to the K100, M65 and H75 Creams, and V30

Worst video I've ever heard. Terrible representation of these speakers. I have all these speakers and they sound nothing like what I hear in this video.
