Wouldn't be surprised if he's using the AFX2 for all or some of the tones......they would never tell.

Cliff has stated many times that certain artists they work with can never allow the public to know they use the AFX amp tones in studio & live because of signature amp deals. The AFX can be so easy to get shit really tight. That's why Misha Mansoor can't do without it for his tight as ass djent shit

I had a pleasant conversation with John Petrucci a couple years back at NAMM at the Hilton. Due in part to having a friendly debate about tube amps vs the fractal units with a friend of mine, I asked John the same question... John, wholeheartedly said he 100% prefers the feel and tone of a real tube amp over the AFX. He says regardless of technology, you cannot capture the feel on the fretboard and the pick attack of a tube amp. He uses the AFX for effects only.

Can't believe G3 didn't stop through Atlanta...sucks. Would have loved to see it again.

That'd be pretty funny, though, Petrucci helps design what is possibly the greatest Mesa amp of all time and becomes the first guitarist with a signature Mesa, carries around 2 extra half-stacks on tour just for show.....but uses an AxeFX for his tones.

Mike Keneally is a great guitarist/musician. He was in Vai's band on the first G3 tour playing keys and guitar. Totally hung with Steve on guitar.

As far as Satch not keeping up...I don't look at it that way at all. He's just doing his thing. It's a stark contrast of styles when you go from Petrucci's set to Joe's. I love Petrucci but all of the technical brilliance gets tired after a while. At least he has a lot of melodic sensibilities which I think gets lost in his speed and technique. Personally, I love Joe's playing and set. I feel like his songs and playing are much more musical, expressive and cohesive than the rest. He certainly isn't innovating with his playing anymore but for what he does he is fantastic. His blues playing and improvisation feels much more genuine that the others during the encores. Either way, I love these shows and like the variety although I still don't get the Phil Collen addition. I thought he was an odd choice and his set was really boring. He should've at least thrown in a couple of Def Leppard covers (in his own style) just so some people would remember who he is. Don't get me wrong I think he's a good player...just not a fit for G3.

G3 was Joe's brainchild from the beginning. It would be weird to do one without him.

Remember when Steve Vai had Tony Macalpine in his touring band? Tony could easily headline a G3. Incredible virtuoso player. And somehow he wound up as Vai's other lead guitarist and their keyboardist. Go figure that one.
Totally...T-Mac is phenomenal.
Did you ever catch the PSMS (Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine, Sherinian) Live in Tokyo video? Kinda to me what a G3 spot with Tony would be!

I went to one of the G3's with Yngwie, Vai with MacAlpine in the band, and Satch.

There is something to be said for being there in person, completely different from what you might feel seeing the videos. Satch honestly stole the show. I love Yngwie's ability, but towards the end of his set I got bored. Vai is an old favorite I had seen a couple of times before, very good as usual. Then Satch just came bopping out from backstage rocking with more energy than either Malmsteen or Vai, and while less technical in his playing, finally got the joint really rocking!

I’d rather listen to Satch than any other guitarist who’s ever been at G3, with the exception of Eric Johnson. Wait...and Paul Gilbert.

I saw the show last night in Detroit, i noticed for his set that he wasn't using his heads. But for the jam session at the end he was using them, the lights were actually on then. I know when he plays with Dream Theater the heads are just for show. Everything is run through his rack off stage.

Satch is an extremely talented player, no doubt, and I try not to ascribe to the notion that playing guitar is some type of competition with winners and losers, but from some of the G3 clips I’ve seen, it kinda seems like poor Satch gets blown off the stage some times. I dunno, maybe that’s unfair.

I helped Uli Roth during the G3 Europe shows.
Joe did great & held his own imo with Schenker & Roth.

Phil Collen was...meh. I liked his tone, but his playing was about what I was expecting. A little inarticulate pentatonic dweedle dee circular shredding. Kind of reminded me of Schon's big solo style. I could almost have pulled this off.
Then Petrucci came out with his seven string. What an ungodly tight sound! One of the best live tones I've ever heard. And his playing was of course dead nutz. BUUUT...it sure looked like he wasn't plugged into the front inputs on either of his 2 JP2C heads. So what was he playing thru? I assume he has another preamp and he's using the JP2Cs for power amps. Does anybody know?
Satch was Satch. He's always been pretty consistent and his Marshalls sounded pretty good, but after Petrucci, it was kind of a letdown.

What was Petrucci playing thru?
I am pretty sure the king of the noodles™️ has put a price on your head for this... be careful
