George Lynch jamming at NAMM 2011 - VIDEO

I watched the vids last nite....it just sounds like him noodling. Sounded like some cool licks in there, what could be heard anyway. He's one of those players that takes awhile to craft those solos you heard on his records. He didnt play those solos right off the bat. I'm sure there were many studio hours logged of stuff like this video till he found his direction.

Improvising is a hard skill to master.

I agree with Mark... and I know Steve Lukather does as well, he´s said a few times how he hates that people bash his 35 years of professional playing based on some little off-the-cuff, one-minute clip that ends up on Youtube. I don´t how many bad days George has in a week, or what´s going on with him specifically, but no-one can bring their A-game every time there´s a camera around these days.

To keep up the thought Dave presents here:
I live in a pretty cold country, granted, the winters around the great lakes are cold, but the summers here really ain't that warm either... I can't count the times I've walked into a guitar shop, taken the mitts off of my ice cold hands, and picked up a new and exiting guitar.

I can play, I can shred pretty fast, but DAMN I'm glad there was no camera around a couple of the times I've tried to do cool stuff with a Floyd guitar on a bone dry amp with a little over AC/DC type gain :D

Nowadays, I'm older, and if I feel that I'm going to embarrass myself, I just play single notes and rhythm instead :D

Mark, you mystify me everytime you put something on YT. You're technique is consistant, your tone is impecable, and do you have to perform a few takes of your work before you feel comfortable on which one to publish? am sure. But one thing is obvious, you devote a significant amount of time to keep your abilities keen. Maybe thats whats going on with George, not enough time behind the axe to keep his skillset alive and well. It certainly is my problem, but I have kids and they have homework and scouts and the need to have a mentor around them who is present and in the now. If my job were to be a guitar hero, at least 7 hours of my day would be spend, working on that. There are no short-cuts to greatness...

There's something to be said about illusion. 25-30 years ago we didn't have YT. We never got to see the human part of our heros. I have seen ALL of my heros on YT screwing up and sounding HORRIBLE. In the 70's and 80's we had albums with pictures(maybe), our heros sounded perfect on record. When we went to see them live we were young, excited and there was no instant replay at home on YT to pick them apart.

Now we see them noodling and farting around...like we do in our basements or bedrooms. Then because they kinda sound like us...humans, we nail them to the cross.

I'm almost 50yrs old. I struggle with 10 pounds over my desired weight, have a hard time sticking to a workout schedule, my hair is thinner. My fucking hands, elbows and back hurt because of 30 yrs of gigging lifting racks and amps and cabs and playing too much. Maybe the guy wears gloves because his hands hurt...mine hurt and I've thought what the hell can I do about this pain.

I've met George at NAMM 2 years ago, he was soft spoken and seemed like a pretty nice guy. He looked incredibly physically fit for his age. I hope I can look that fit..minius the tan (but he does live in Arizona).

I agree, his playing doesn't sound like what he was...or maybe he doesn't sound like what he is capable of doing. People are funny, if he played like he used too we would all complain that he sounds just like he always has and hasn't expanded his horizons.

Hockey players that were amazing 30 years ago wouldn't last a shift on the ice with the players of today if they were the same age and skill level as they were. Things evolve, people build a better mouse trap.
I wish George would stick to what he did, because what he did was amazing. Please George more gain :).

I know there are players that have evolved and still sound amazing, however I have seen on YT many of those players screw up pretty bad....sometimes it gives me hope..lol.

Sometimes I think it's too bad the mystique has left the industry...everything is on the table now in plain view...must make for a nervous stomach for these "Rock Stars".

Wow, that is the most well thought out best written post I have seen in a long time. I agree with Mark.

Thanks Brad :)

Damn

I don't know how anyone could judge some ones else is playing with all that back ground noise.

The Magic Gloves are lame though

Almost 50 huh? lol Well Junior .....after fifty, it doesn't get better! It works on a logarithmic scale and gets twice as bad as the year before.
That being said, I'm turning 55 next month and although I am in pain with bad arthritis in the knees, elbows and hands almost every minute of my waking hours, I am a better player today that I have ever been. There is no excuse for not picking up your instrument and honing your craft. And I'll bet anyone here who considers themselves any kind of a player will agree.

PS: Celebrex and Aspirin on the bad days and combine that with dilaudid on the really bad days

I love a man who's honest
A lot of 80's music was too far from center for me.
I liked Led Zep, Deep Purple, Ozzy, Van Halen, Whitesnake, etc...
When my friends started playing stuff like Faster Pussycat, Dokken, Poison, Warrant...I didn't get it. Hair poser crap! There was a lot of crap in that decade.

I just think its time for Clipman to provide a Clip and End all this MADNESS....

I doubt George really cares what any of us think
Maybe he was just noodling around with a tone he dosent use everyday, not everyone can play with almost no gain (except A Wood)
I really only heard about 4 actual notes with all the noise
It would suck to have every last thing you ever played put under a microscope by every bedroom guitar hero who never did a dam thing on his own
Just sayin ;)

I think a good run of 'Talk Dirty to me' would just about hit the spot this cold winter evening.

The older I get...The better I was...For alot of guitar players...this is true...I'm one of em

That could be true. All these choices we have now, it's easy to get caught up in the tone chase rather than improving the craft.

Agreed.
I find that playing with other musicians in a band or jamming with musicians helps growth.
Particularly musicians on the same level or higher.
For me, then its about having a present sound and challenging the force or being challenged.
That's when the doors get opened and the box flatened.
Otherwise I get stuck playing to the amp rather then with the amp.
