Getting back into playing.. need a few pedals to start.

Buddy got some drums and we've been jamming around a bit. We like modern rock (Foo Fighters, Chevelle) but also classic rock and 80's stuff too. I have a Blackstar HT5 that has a good sound coming out of my 5150 4x cab. I wanted to get a few pedals to add some detail to the sound. Was thinking maybe a delay and reverb (since the HT5 does not have reverb). Would those be two good pedals to start with or are there others you would recommend before this? I do have a Bad Monkey OD and Phase 90 from back in the day, so these would be add-ons to those.

Thanks,
John

definitely a delay, TC flashback or MXR Carbon Copy would be good ones, reverb is a matter of taste and what styles you play. I like verb and use it in small amount for the depth it adds to cleaner sounds, others don't like reverb at all so YMMV.

Delay, a little chorus to your liking, wah wah... A lot of people round here don't really like the wah but it's one of my most used pedals, whether I use it as a fake talk box when jamming to Bon Jovi or Crue, solo boost of sorts until my OD gets here, accent to solos when you only know the gist of it and not note for note, etc...

Edit: I also use my wah for our Lady Gaga songs, for electronic-y kinda stuff, pump that wah and it sounds better lol I may have Kirk Hammett disease with all my wah-ing...

I would go with delay, wah, and maybe chorus if you wanted that wetter rock sound. Lots of people talk shit about the wah (thank Kirk) but it is an awesome device.

I have a wah on the list for down the line... used to have an original Cry Baby I found in the basement of my college house, but it got fried.

I'd love to have a POG and SuperEgo, but out of my wallet range for just playing with buddies.. at least at the moment.

Get a Crybaby, a delay like the Carbon Copy to fatten up the sound (use it more like a verb than a long delay) and maybe a chorus if you're doing 80's stuff and you should sound pretty alright

Delay & reverb are fun, but will likely decrease detail. Time based fx are tough to get right live, & reverb totally washes out your sound in most jams. I like the Idea of Wah, OD, & phaser

I have a Morley Tremonti wah and its great. Derived from the bad horsie.

If i was going to buy just one pedal it would be one of the zoom MS series, best bang for buck. Why settle for jist one sound. $100

I've never played a Blackstar, so don't take this as a knock on 'em... but I always say first get an amp that sounds so good you don't even feel you need pedals. So if you are absolutely in love with your amp... I'd say go with a delay... but I'm not into either of those bands. Not sure how much it'll help you with that sound.

I would get an octave pedal, especially if your jammin with just a drummer, let's you fatten up some single string lines and adds some bass :)
Agreed, Boss OC-2 is best.

I had this vision of building a gnarly pedalboard, but realised there are only so many pedals I need, especially owning a 4-Channel head.

In the loop I've got Chorus, Delay, & Reverb. Standard. The chorus barely ever comes on & even then only with cleans.
Out front I have the usual culprits. Buffer, Compressor, Tuner, Overdrive & Noise Suppressor.
That's a done-deal for me.

The bigger pedal boards tend to be run through a clean amp. You'll find that half those pedals will be overdrive pedals.

I would be tempted to suggest grabbing a few JoJo pedals to start with and replace with better quality ones as and when...

This is what I'm feeling too. I've been playing lots of songs and don't find the need for much on the dirty side, really just looking for stuff on the clean. I do like the gain I get from my dirt side, so no need for any distortion pedals at the moment. I'm really trying to keep things simple. I like your layout.

My Keeley compressor is on full time. It's an awesome purchase. Cleans sound amazing. I use the overdrive pedal to overdrive the dirty channels of my amp to get the desired bite & pick attack. The noise suppressor specifically removes the unwanted hiss from the overdrive. All the pedals have a practical function.

Happy tone hunting. I think it's about building on an idea & adding ancillary equipment as & when you need it. One of the reasons why I don't like multi effects. A lot of the magic in finding & developing your sound & demoing pedals is lost.

Delay has always been the first pedal on my agenda.

I think I'm just going to start with delay and a tuner (tired of plugging into my non-pedal tuner all the time). Then I'll feel out what needs to come next.. if anything. Thanks guys.
