Gly says he never puts a mic closer than like 1 foot from a guitar amp..
He says SSL Consoles sound like shit.. LOL

Good interview tho. It seems his philosophy is less is more, capture a performance and he still records on Tape!
He basically says modern recordings are dogshit. I'd have to agree..

Comment??

You can 100% accurately predict every word that comes out of these guys' mouths before they say it. Probably time for a Vintage Nostalgia bingo card.

This guy was a pioneer in making damn sure you got something usable with a very minimal mic setup, and it often forms the basis of a tone core even when far more mics are used, but like the beatles or DSOM, if you made an album like that today, you'd be fired on the spot. The isolation they hate so much is the basis of today's sound

Glyn Johns is my favorite engineer and producer. His approach to recording is as simple as it can be, and he made everything he did sound fantastic!
His book is an incredible reading and a must for recording engineers.
One of the finest!

Cool thread topic.

Modern recordings are crap but how many guys can afford to cut to two inch tape? It, and high quality outboard gear, are kind of an ivory tower luxury now. Even worse than the junk ass digital gear is the way modern records are mastered. Compress the shit out of everything then boost the hell out of it and you have a record that is ear fatiguing as hell. One of many factors pushing towards an industry driven by singles instead of albums.

Try to break the mold and your recording is quieter than the rest and doesn't stand out when you get spins. After many trips to everything from crappy home studios with tiny iso booths, top of the line studios with the best stuff availabe, 8 track reel to reels, ADATs,, and just doing it myself in a doublewide on a Tascam, lol, I've come to the conclusion that there is no perfect way to record and the results really boil down to whether the engineer gives a shit about your product or not. Most of them are there to collect a check and don't give a damn and you still take it on the chin when it's mastered....

Agreed. Everything is way to compressed. It begins to stress you out as a listener because things don't breathe.
Plus, everything is finger fucked to death in the digital realm, and rarely is an actual performance recorded. Shit is mostly fake..

People that have never owned a real piece of hardware think they're the next Mutt Lange with their Plugins.. GTFOH..
Real gear just sounds better. GJ said he likes the U67 for Drums.. 2 of them cost nearly 16K.. LOL There is the predicament..

Digital brings it to the masses, but more is not more. Recordings are bright and harsh.. Give me the sound of Bad Company's 1st album over most new shit today..

Have to agree with everything you are saying here. Bright and harsh, yep. Too crispy with too much "air" feels like I deep fried my ears by the time you get through a record. I will say I think some really nice mics are available to the consumer now without needing a million dollar studio budget and some of the plug ins are decent for digital shit but it's still digital shit. Too bad there isn't anyone making a decent quality tape machine withing reasonable $ and tape. Warm Audio where the hell are you on that one? LOL.

I was arguing with some dudes about cassette tape vs CD's the other day. I still prefer the cassettes tbh. Warmer, no harsh high transients. Less crisp detail but no ear rape either. My wife did some recording a few years ago. It was digital but she had some actual 33 rpm records printed and it definitely dealt a blow to that ear fatiguing air on the CD. Not sure how the mastering played into that but the whole thing just sounded better and was more pleasurable to listen to as a collection. But damn, the price wasn't cheap and the actual record quality itself wasn't what you used to get. Surprise surprise.

I love the album he did with Satriani. Sounds so much more organic and real than the usual catalog. Great sounds and performances rather than endless digital massaging and tweaking things to death. All the things you guys are describing and it's a pleasure to listen through. The antithesis of his 'Engines of Creation' album.
I know Joe didn't enjoy the album from watching the studio footage, but it came out fantastic.

Most modern recordings are crap not because they are done in Protools, instead of tape. Most modern recordings are crap because they are done separated, edited to death, grid aligned, all because the musicianship took a huge fall within the last two decades.
Most important factor of any album, music quality, was the most affected. And if the music itself isn't good, how expensive was the gear and studio, and who produced it won't matter at all. Musicians got lazy, and that reflects on their songwriting and performing.
Listen to early Metallica, Megadeth, Sepultura, Guns N Roses, and many, many others that are still around. Nothing they've done within the last 20 years compared to what they did they had to be great or they would not make it.
