DSL100HR. Is it just me?

Tried that can't get a decent sound out of it other than clean or light breakup. Maybe there's something wrong with it.

That would be my guess. Did you do any tube rolling? There should be a lot more there then light breakup.
 
It would get you out of a bind but it wouldn't be my first choice.
 
I watched Leon Todd's review of VHT Ultralead yesterday and what caught my ear was mention about stiffness of VHT which reminds him DSLs and I have to agree. The same with JVMs and Jubilees. Not fun amps to play at all. For example remped JVM sound superb on Ola Englund album but in person there is a lot of missing. I like DSL40 CR more than 100W because added compresion helps the amp to be more like JCM800 feel-wise.


See this is a good example of what works for one player might not work for another.

I've had multiple VHT/Fryette amps and the JVM is not even in the ballpark "to me" when it comes to stiffness. To me the JVM is liquid and forgiving to play, my Ultra Leads, SigX's are not. To me you really need to have your shit together to handle Fryette stuff.

Now when I had my chops together years ago it came down to the JVM and Sig as my main amp, I went with the JVM because ultimately I wanted more Marshall flavor. Fast forward to a couple years ago and bought another SigX and the stiffness to me stood out like a sore thumb vs. the JVM. Love the Sig but let it go because I just don't want to put the time into getting my chops together anymore. Frankly one of the great things about Fryette's stuff is what you put in that's what your going to get., no hiding on those things.

As an aside, I've never liked any version of the DSL's. I tried many times to bond with the 2000's and it just never happened. I've never liked the Jube's either, probably one of my least liked Marshalls. On the flipside, I see/hear guys get unbelievable tones out of them though, just not me. Further note, per Santiago the JVM designer, nothing in that amp was taken from the DSL series. The design basis of the JVM was a (if I remember correctly from his recent interview ) was 800's, modded 800's and the JTM series. Outside amps that were used as reference the OG 5150 and Dual Rect. I think there was another high gainer that was used as reference as well.

Wouldn't surprise me if the amp's influence was 800/5150/dual rec. They have very similar preamp circuits. If he would have included the SLO I would say it's even more evident.

To the stiffness point, I feel that way with Wizard and VHT, to a lesser extent, Friedman, and to a slightly lesser extent, Bogner.

Yeah there is a great interview out there with Santiago and the 5150, DR's and another amp were the reference points for the JVM. The starting platform was the 800. The Aldrich amp prototype, that one of the guys in a metal band has been using for years, can't remember the bands name, that amp was based on the OD1 channel the of JVM. I think that guy finally retired them and is using Synergy stuff. There was reportedly another amp that several guys like Slash and Bonamassa tested for a bit that they shelved. I wonder if they dust that one off and finally introduce it at NAMM.

I agree on the Friedman stuff, whereas the Bogner stuff I've owned is just to loose or a certain lag for me, def something I couldn't bond with on the Ecstacy I had. Although I'm really interested in the Snorkler.

The feel thing IMO is a highly underrated aspect of buying an amp, I mean we can sit here all day and listen to clips but you never really know until you plug in.
 
No I just let go of the idea an amp.needs a boost and adjusted everything else and ended up liking the results better, for every amp I've ever had.

A boost is like the uneducated version of an EQ pedal being used. It's like "I'm too lazy to use an eq and really sculpture my tone so I'm going to do what everyone i worship online does"

I'm straight in tight as master of puppets over here at all times tubed to about a C standard. Assuming I tolerate loose tones is me assuming youre saying that the amp is loose when its you, the user dialing it that way. Some amps have too much bass etc etc.... you can dial it out, and dial other things around... starting at noon is the dumbest shit I've ever seen also. Some need to start at 2 ?

I'm sure i could talk until I'm blue but it doesnt translate. I'd just have to plug my guitar into your amp and sit there and show you how to dial something by ear instead of the eyes. Then you'd still claim YOU needed a boost because it felt "too dry" or "too stiff". Maybe even "too clear" because alot of gain isn't needed when you're legit badass.

Which means there is no wrong or right.

Its just cork sniff or cork free anymore.

This amp sounds like shit. Every review online raves about How great this amp is. There's even one guy on YouTube who says he likes it better than his Friedman's and Bogner's. On the Marshall forum they are going on about how this is the greatest modern Marshall even better than the JVM I commented that I found it thin and had a mushy bottom end and I got roasted , called a noob and basically told I don't know what I'm doing. I'm far from a noob I bought my first J CM 800 brand new in 1987 I've had Many nice amps, including old Marshalls and know how to dial them in. Side by side through the same cabs my splawn quick rod destroys this DSL and it's not even close maybe there's something wrong with the particular one I have but the overdrive or distortion has no body. The bass totally flubs out with any type of low notes or Palm mutes . the only way it's usable is with the bass totally off and then the top end is totally unbearable. like I said maybe it's something with this unit but I've also owned a DSL40 and the DSL 20 and found them both unbearable. I did check the bias and changed preamp tubes with no change. Anybody own one?

The one I played at GC a few months ago, was new, and it sounded like massive flubby ass. I'm sure you could make that one work with an SD1, but it shouldn't sound like that as a base tone.

I don't remember my older one from 1998 sounding like this. It did have a looser bottom end, but it was useable without a boost. I'm convinced they have changed.
 
I’ve had a couple of the 40CR’s, one was converted to a head that I got for like $300. I think they’re fun and sound great for what they are. Never felt like I didn’t get more than my moneys worth with them. This shits all so subjective though. 1 guy likes it, 1 guy hates it, then what? Who cares?
 
I think this is why Sweetwater started modded them to sell them -- they knew the new 100's sound like ass. I am curious how those Sweetwater ones sound though.
