What are some delays that work well in front of an amp better than in the loop. Im trying to find a delay that will sound good infront of my 5150iii

This topic was just discussed at length last week...the general feeling here was there isnt any delays that sound good in front of a distorted amp. Delay just needs to be post pre-amp if your using any kind of gain at all. I had a tape delay at one time that sounded good, but a lot of work to maintain one of those.

I will say it again, the Hardwire Delay is an awesome pedal that sounds great in front of the amp, everytime this comes up I mention Hardwire, great sounding well built pedal for a reasonable price, what else is needed?

None sound very good IMO, but try analog or a warm sounding digital delay. The key is to BARELY have the effect level turned up. Similar to to Randy's ED video.

The Hardwire stuff is unbeatable at the price.
I made a little pedal board for an 80's band I'm reluctantly participating in with the guiding principal that it would be to put in front of any shitty amp in a Thai rehearsal space (and believe me you have never seen rundown until you've seen a rehearsal space in Bangkok) or a rented amp if I fly to Singapore and do a gig. I put the Carbon Copy on the board and with a Pinnacle II behind it I thought it sounds killer..... so my vote goes to MXR Carbon Copy, but if I had a 5150III at my disposal I would use the loop!

Never had any of luck out in front of a distorted amp with a digital delay (haven't tried it with an analog). My DD-3 works nicely in front only when running a clean amp+pedals and the delay after the OD pedals in the chain.

I am hoping the TC electronic nova Repeater will work well in front of my vintage amps which have no loops. I get all my gain from pedals in this case. Currently running a Maxon AD-80 analog delay set for slap back, but looking for a digital delay with tap tempo for longer delay times....

I use the delays on my M9 in front of my amp, both clean and dirty, and I think it sounds good

The only reason I haven't is because I've got my board wired to be both my electric and acoustic board, and I can't run into a loop doing the acoustic thing, and well, I'm lazy, and don't feel like running the extra cables to the loop
Eventually, I will try it. But, my point was that I like the sound up front. It doesn't seem to sound bad to me, so I guess that's all that matters.

Hardwire delay is EXCELLENT in front of through the loop...and I play a 5150 with mine.
I use the loop most of the time, though.

As suggested by many RT forum memebers to me a while ago, Try an analog in front. Digital in the loop. This is working great for me with my 5150.

MXR Carbon Copy! Great Analog pedal that I've used in front of a Krank RevJr, Peavey XXX, and Marshall DSL and sounded better in front of all 3 amps rather than being placed in the Loop. JMO.

But ya, use the loop of your amp, unless you are only going to use delay while on the clean channel (and no dirt pedals), you may be able to get away with it in that case. If you have the cash to spend, SUPER DELAY
